Men's Basketball Sets Program Wins Record, Clinches 1st Round Bye

Scranton, Pa. - Marywood University's men's basketball team set a program record with their 16th win of the season and clinched a first-round bye in the process as the Pacers defeated Immaculata 99-72 Wednesday evening at the Insalaco Arena.

Marywood (16-8, 8-3 Atlantic East) also moved into a first-place tie with Gwynedd Mercy, who is also 8-3 in the league. The two will square off this weekend at GMU for the top-seed in the post-season tournament.  Marywood defeated the Griffins 84-69 at home on January 23.

The 25-point win for the Pacers comes three and a half weeks after Immaculata beat Marywood by 21 at home to hand the Pacers their first league loss of the year, which came a game before Marywood's win over GMU.

Jaden Rhoden and Jeremy Ringland proved to be a two-headed monster that the Mighty Macs (10-14, 4-7 AEC) could not contain.  The duo combined for 20 of Marywood's 24 points in the opening 9:30 as the Pacers took control after finding themselves down in the early minutes.  Rhoden actually started off by scoring nine of the Pacers' first 11 points, and Ringland eventually went 4-for-4 from behind the arc in the first half to go into the break with 20 points. Rhoden had 15 by halftime.

At the end of the game, the duo combined for 47 points, with Ringland's team-high 25 edging out Rhoden's 22-point performance.  Thomas Swartz added 16.  Mike Piekarski had a game-high 26 for Immaculata in the loss.

Marywood hit nearly 53% of their shots from the floor in the opening half including seven three pointers as they built a 17-point, 48-31 lead at the break.  Immaculata tried to stay in it with the long ball, but connected on just three of 11 attempts from behind the arc in the opening half.

Marywood cooled down slightly in the second half, dropping 48.1% (13 of 27) shots from the field and hit just two three-pointers, but the Pacers did manage a 51 point half.  In all, Marywood out-rebounded Immaculata 51-30 (37-20 on the defensive boards) and had 40 points in the paint.  The Pacers also had 22 assists to 12 for the Mighty Macs.

Marywood will face the Griffins at 3:00 pm Saturday in Gwynedd Valley for the Atlantic East top-seed. Both teams have clinched a first-round bye and will host semifinal matchups on February 20.
