Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Marywood Holds Off GMU, Hosts Griffins again Monday

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - Marywood University held off a late rally attempt from Gwynedd Mercy University Saturday afternoon for a 66-62 Atlantic East Conference women's basketball win. The Pacers (12-13) will turn right around and host the Griffins (10-15) again Monday in first round playoff action.

After finding themselves down by as many as 14 (58-44) with just 5:47 left in the game, the Griffins went on a furious rally and got to within three (63-30) after a 6-0 run that lasted just 27 seconds.  After another Gwynedd Mercy layup with 25 ticks left made it 65-62, the hosts were forced to foul five consecutive times to send the Pacers to the charity stripe. That fifth foul came with just one tick left on the clock, and Natasha Hessling nailed the first free throw to make it a two-possession game. The second attempt missed, but the clock ran out before GMU could get a shot off.

Hessling finished with 22 points and nine rebounds after going 10-of-15 from the floor. Aryah Aungst went for 18 points and seven boards for the Pacers and added three blocks, a game-high.

Hessling's 22-point effort and nine boards were both game-highs. Emily Theobald grabbed eight boards, four each on the offensive and defensive glass for the Pacers as Marywood out-rebounded the Griffins 39-34.

Marywood (7-5 Atlantic East) shot 51% (26 of 51) from the floor while limiting GMU (3-9 Atlantic East) to 33.8% (23 of 68) shooting. The Pacers were able to knock down 5 of 10 (50%) from three point range while Gwynedd hit just 26.9% (7 of 26) from long range.

A tight first quarter saw the Griffins end the opening 10 minutes with a 21-18 lead.  Hessling and Aungst opened the second quarter on a 7-0 run themselves and gave the Pacers a 24-21 lead.  Eventually the teams would go into the locker room tied at 30, but the Pacers never relinquished that lead again.

With the score knotted one last time at 34-34, Marywood used another 7-0 run to take a 41-34 lead as Hessling and Theobald sandwiched a pair of jumpers around and Aungst trey.

With a seven-point 47-40 lead at the end of the third, Alyssa Olsen opened the fourth with a three to put Marywood up 10 and give the Pacers their first double-digit lead.  Marywood would maintain that cushion until the Griffins began their aforementioned rally attempt that eventually fell short.

Monday's opening round game will tip-off at 7:00 pm in the Insalaco Arena. Marywood's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee is promoting a "white out" and the first 50 students through the door will receive a free t-shirt.
