Women's Basketball's Atlantic East Run Ends in Overtime Thriller

Radnor, Pa. – Third-seeded Marywood University took No. 2 Cabrini University to overtime before falling short 78-68 in the Atlantic East Conference women's basketball semifinal. The Pacers led for the majority of regulation before the Cavaliers came back in the final minutes of play.

Sophomore forward Emily Theobald hit a game-tying 3-pointer with eight seconds left to tie the game at 67-67. Olson fed a pass that Theobald connected on for her first made 3-pointer of the entire season.

Marywood had a chance to score just before the end of the half but were unable to get a shot off. The Cavaliers stepped it up in the overtime period by outscoring the Pacers 11-1 in overtime.

Cabrini advances to play at top-seeded Marymount University in the inaugural Atlantic East Conference championship game on Saturday. Both teams reached the second round of the NCAA tournament last season.

Fellow senior Alyssa Olson closed her career with 17 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Theobald finished with 15 rebounds.

Sophomore guard Marissa Fernandez Tierney provided the Pacers with eight points and seven rebounds.

After trailing at the conclusion of the first quarter, Marywood went on a 13-2 run to take its largest lead of the game (32-24) on a Fernandez Tierney 3-pointer at the 3:18 mark of the second quarter. A free throw by Fernandez Tierney helped the Pacers lead, but Cabrini's Nomi Washington connected on a long-distance shot with two seconds left before the buzzer.

Marywood stretched its lead to seven in the second half with the first four points. Hessling made a jumper on a Kilie Wyers feed at 6:31 to go ahead by a 45-38 score. An eight-point Cabrini run resurfaced a Cavaliers lead on a Lexi Edwards layup. Theobald made a layup on a back door pass from Hessling to retake the lead, and neither team scored for the last 1:56 of the third quarter.

Olson opened the fourth with a 3-pointer to take a 54-48. A seven-point Cabrini run put the Cavaliers in the driver's seat. Olson made a jump shot with two minutes on the clock to give a 64-63 advantage. Cabrini's Lexi Edwards and Ashley Tutzauer made baskets on consecutive possessions to take the three-point lead before Theobald's 3-pointer.
