Men's Lacrosse Ousts Utica Behind Second-Half Burst

Scranton, Pa. – Marywood University went on a five-goal run in the second half to take down Utica College 13-11 Wednesday in non-conference men's lacrosse action. The Pacers claimed their second victory in the past three games.

Zach Vaughn and Eric Morin both led the Pacers with five points. Vaughan tallied four goals and an assist. Morin finished with three goals and two assists.

Connor Reed made 13 saves to secure his second victory of the season.

Zach Bradbury was proficient from the faceoff-x, winning 16 of 26 chances (61.5 percent) with five ground balls. Defender Joseph Guida also contributed with five ground balls.

Jeff Johnson and Patrick Dingwell both provided two goals and an assist. Matt Mitarotonda contributed a goal and two assists.

Defensively, the Pacers also received help from Eric Stewart, Vaughan, and Justin Einwechter with four ground balls.

Marywood went into halftime at a 5-4 disadvantage after Utica's John Avery and James Daniele teamed up with a late interception in the Pacers' backfield and a quick goal with 10 seconds remaining. The Pacers came out of the second half with five consecutive goals over a 12:30 span.

Fifty-four seconds into the half, Morin tied the game back at five apiece. Dingwell took the lead at the 12:09 mark with a goal from Johnsen. Vaughan stretched it to a 7-5 advantage with a behind-the-back shot on a backdoor pass from Dingwell at 9:25.

The Pacers' advantage seemed to be in trouble when a three-minute non-releasable equipment violation. Not only did the Pacers' kill the penalty, but a Utica penalty left an even-man situation that allowed Morin to score an unassisted goal. Johnsen capped the scoring with 2:40 left in the third for a 10-5 lead.

Three unanswered Utica goals put the Pioneers within two on a Duby goal. Dingwell responded with a man-up goal to end the run with 11:25.

Vaughan scored twice within 40 seconds to advance the lead to 13-9 with 7:34 remaining.

Dale Wagner and Craig DiSanto kept the Pioneers' hopes alive with back-to-back goals in a 44-second span. With a two-goal lead, Reed made a pair of saves, but Utica cleared successfully with 2:25 left and enough time for a comeback effort.

Dingwell charged at DiSanto and caused a turnover with a ground ball to solidify the victory.

Marywood outshot Utica 43-40. The Pacers won the ground ball game 40-27. They won despite going 15 of 24 on clear chances.

The Pacers are off for the remainder of Spring Break, and they will travel to King's College on Wednesday, March 20 at 7 pm.
