Softball Splits in Atlantic East Opener

Dover, Del. - Marywood University scored two late runs to win their inaugural Atlantic East Conference softball game 4-2 but Wesley College won 12-1 in game two as the Pacers and Wolverines split their opening series with a win apiece.

Marywood now stands at 5-11 (1-1 AEC) while Wesley moves to 12-12 (1-1).

Megan Gaeb singled home Hailey Rapisardi in the opener to put the Pacers up 1-0 in the second inning.  Wesley tied the game in the bottom of the fifth, scoring on a wild pitch, but Marywood answered right back with a RBI single up the middle from Kate O'Meara as Sara Hayes scored the go ahead run.

Marywood got two insurance runs in their last at-bats which proved to be necessary as a Wesley solo homer to open the bottom of the seventh cut it to 4-2.  Marywood's two runs in the top of the seventh were unearned as both Kaitlyn Epler and Julianna Beidler scored on errors.

After giving up the solo homer to open the bottom of the seventh, Kirstie Alvarez (4-4) settled down and got the final three outs to pick up the win. She struck out six in the victory and also had a double at the plate.  Beidler, Rapisardi and Hayes all collected two hits at the plate to lead Marywood offensively. Gaeb and O'Meara had the Pacers' two RBI.

Wesley would prove to be too much for Marywood in the nightcap as the Wolverines salvaged the split with a 12-1 win in five innings.  Epler had Marywood's lone hit in game two as the Pacers were out-hit 13-1.  Wesley plated 11 runs over the opening two innings.

Katie Siano (1-5) took the loss for Marywood, allowing six earned runs on 11 hits over the opening three innings.  Marywood committed three errors in the game that proved costly.

Marywood hosts Cazenovia College at 2:00 pm Sunday for a non-conference twinbill.
