Baseball Snaps Skid, Splits with Neumann

Scranton, Pa. - Marywood University snapped a seven game losing streak, outlasting Neumann University 7-6 in an 8-inning opening game. The Knights rallied for a 10-6 game two win to salvage the split Saturday afternoon.

Marywood had a early 4-1 lead in the opener but needed a two-out, two-run double from Jake Schuster in the bottom half of the seventh to force extra innings on senior day.  There, Bubba Klein singled to right center to bring John Mandarano across for the game-winning run.

Schuster also doubled in a run in the first inning, giving the Pacers a 1-0 lead. That lead doubled in the third when Trevor Powers doubled to right. Schuster would be intentionally walked later that inning and Neumann avoided more damage until the fourth.  Shane Smith singled in a run and would later score on an error to make it a 4-1 ballgame.

Neumann rallied with three in the fifth, evening the game at 4-4, and would score a single run in the top of the sixth and seventh to take a 6-4 lead.  That's when Schuster doubled to tie the game up and force extra frames.

Schuster went 2-fo-3 with three RBI in the opener.  Morgan Theobald, Klein and Mandarano all had two hits as well.  TJ Lacey (1-1) got the win, pitching the final two innings, striking out two and allowing just two hits. Tyler Quick and Cody Reese held the Knights to just one hit over the opening five innings of play.  In all, Marywood out-hit the visitors 11-6 in the opener.

In game two, after both teams scored a run apiece in the first inning, Neumann used a five-run second to break things open.   They would carry that to the 10-6 win.  Schuster again went 2-for-3 with a homer, triple and three more RBI in the nightcap, while Theobald picked up another two doubles as part of a 2-for-4 effort at the plate.

Salvatore Monello (1-2) suffered the loss.  Nathan Michener struck out three in two innings of relief.

Marywood now stands at 5-19 (1-7 Atlantic East).  Neumann is 12-15 (3-5) after the split.

The Pacers will travel to nearby Keystone College Tuesday for a 4:00 pm single game.
