Marywood Drops Midweek Atlantic East Matchup to Griffins

David Smith scores first goal of the season

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. – Marywood University fell in the Atlantic East Conference men's lacrosse standings with a 14-5 loss to Gwynedd Mercy University on Wednesday. The Griffins broke away by scoring eight consecutive goals in the second half.

Senior Luke Shedler scored a pair of goals for the Pacers. Fellow classmate David Smith added his first goal of the season.

Zach Bradbury and Luke McFadden each finished with four ground balls. Bradbury won 11 of 19 faceoff chances.

Matt Leen made four saves in taking the loss. Connor Reed made five stops.

Gwynedd Mercy's Ryan Simpson scored four goals. Joseph Pandolfi and Jacob Dzierzgowski each had two goals and an assist.

Both the Pacers and Griffins were squared away 2-2 after the first period. Shedler and Eric Morin each tallied a goal to even the score following Griffin goals.

Gwynedd Mercy created distance from the Pacers with four straight second-period goals. Simpson put the Griffins ahead 6-2 before a pair of Marywood (5-9, 2-3 Atlantic East) goals within a half-minute. Thirty-five seconds after Simpson's goal, Shedler responded with a netter from Patrick Dingwell. After the Pacers won the next faceoff, Zach Beja scored from Jeff Johnsen 29 seconds later to cut Gwynedd Mercy's lead to 6-4 at the halftime break.

The Griffins outshot the Pacers by a 45-27 margin. The Griffins had a 20-17 advantage in ground balls.

Marywood is assured of an Atlantic East playoff spot with one game remaining on the schedule. The Pacers travel to Neumann University on Wednesday, April 24.
