Softball Sweeps Delaware Valley on Senior Day

Scranton, Pa. - Marywood University swept visiting Delaware Valley University 3-1 and 12-4 on senior day in non-conference softball action Sunday afternoon.  The second game ended in six innings.

Marywood (11-15) struggled at the plate in the opening three innings of the twinbill as the Pacers were held without a hit and trailed 1-0. But their fortunes would change in the fifth, where they plated all three of their runs.

With runners at first and second, Delaware Valley's centerfielder made a great play by gunning out a runner at home to keep Marywood off the scoreboard.  But that throw allowed Marywood to get runners at second and third, and, Sara Hayes would double down the left field line to bring both runners across and give the Pacers a 2-1 lead. The Aggies' centerfielder ended the inning with another throw-out at the plate.

Kaitlyn Epler would then single up the middle to bring Hayes around for an insurance run.  That would be all the offense Kirstie Alvarez would need for her seventh win of the season (7-6), as she struck out six in her complete-game victory.

Epler, Julianna Beidler and Megan Gaeb all finished the opener 2-for-3 at the plate.

In the nightcap, Marywood gave up two runs in the top of the first but answered back with three of their own in the bottom half of the frame.  Sierra Mulgrew brought in two of those with a single up the middle, and Kate O'Meara singled to bring Mulgrew home.

The Pacers added two more in the second on RBI singles from Jackie Burke and Alvarez.

Del Val tighted the game with two runs in the top of the fourth to get to within one (5-4), but the Pacers used another three run inning to gain a comfortable lead.  A four-run home half of the sixth put the game away early as O'Meara and Sarah Witte both had run-scoring doubles.

Katie Siano improved to 4-6 on the year after pitching the opening four innings.  Amanda Bridgwood sealed the win with two innings of solid relief work.

Alvarez, O'Meara and Witte all finished with three hits in the nightcap.

In between games, the Pacers honored their five seniors in Alvarez, O'Meara, Bridgwood, Hannah Docalovich and Siano.

Marywood travels to nearby Keystone College for a 3:00 pm doubleheader Tuesday.
