Second Half Rally Lifts Women's Soccer to Signature Win

Scranton, Pa. - Marywood University's women's soccer team scored two second half goals and held on for a signature win over Kean University Wednesday evening in Scranton. The Pacers (2-5) got goals from Antonella Doglio and Jackie VonItter in the 2-1 victory.

The Pacers were out-shot 9-3 in the opening half, and the Cougars (3-5) capitalized on an early corner kick opportunity.  Deana Abdou sent a dangerous ball through the penalty box from the left corner flag, and Clare Lewis one-timed it home at the far-post to put the visitors up 1-0 just 15:53 into the non-conference game.

But Marywood held firm the rest of the half, despite being out-shot 3-1 on goal in the opening 45, and went into the break down just the one goal.

A more evenly played second frame favored the Pacers, as they took eight opportunities at net to Kean's seven.  That offensive aggressiveness from the Pacers paid off in the 73rd minute, when Doglio took a Cara Romaniello pass from the flank, beat a defender and lofted a shot that skipped off a Cougar defender's head and over the goalkeeper into the net, knotting the game at 1-1.

Moments later, Romaniello found VonItter on top of the 18, and the senior captain found paydirt at the far-post.  VonItter's goal, her team-leading fourth of the season, was scored in the 76th minute of action.

Both teams had several more opportunities before Marywood buckled down defensively and began running out the clock any chance they could get.  The Pacers' offense held possession several times in the corner to run down the clock, and the Marywood defense held firm, turning away several more dangerous Kean looks, two of which came on corner kick opportunities.

Marywood was out-shot 16-11 for the game, but held an 8-7 advantage in shots on goal.  Marywood edged Kean 5-4 in corner kick opportunities.

Bella DiToma made five stops in goal to pick up her second win of the year between the posts.  Mary Bystrycki made a game-high six stops for Kean.

The Pacers host Wilkes Saturday afternoon at 1:00 pm.
