Marymount Eliminates Pacers from Atlantic East Postseason

Arlington, Va. – Host and third-seeded Marymount University defeated No. 6 Marywood University 76-61 in the opening round of the Atlantic East Conference men's basketball tournament Tuesday evening.

Marywood was playing back-to-back days after winning a "play-in" game Monday evening verse Neumann. They also played their third game in four days after falling at Marymount to close the regular season Saturday.

Marywood closes the season at 8-19 after reaching their third consecutive post-season tournament, the best stretch in program history.

Jack DeGroot led Marywood with a game-high 26 points. Donovan Catchings added 17 points and had three assists, giving him 170 helpers for the season and 366 for his career, extending program records he already owns in both categories.

DeGroot was 9 for 15 on the night and went 3 for 6 from behind the arc. Steve Etienne led Marymount with 23. Xavier Reaves had 16 for the Saints.

The Saints (17-9) survived an early second half scare from the sixth-seeded Pacers.  They move on to take on No. 2 Gwynedd Mercy University Thursday.

After allowing two dunks to open the second half and finding themselves down eight (39-31), Marywood hit three straight threes to take their first lead of the game as they went up 40-39.  DeGroot started the run with a tough three, then Catchings nailed back-to-back threes to put the Pacers up one.

But after the Pacers' quick run, Marymount answered with one of their own, a 10-2 spurt, that put the Saints back up for good.

Marywood got back to within five (51-46) as the clock ticked to under 10 minutes remaining, and again by the eight-and-seven-minute marks, but were never able to get closer. A fast-break dunk and a three-pointer from the hosts on consecutive possessions had them up double digits with six to play.

The Saints had a decisive advantage in points in the paint (38-22), rebounds (38-28) and bench points (22-7).
