Women's Basketball Again Threatens No. 1 Marymount, Falls in Atlantic East Semi

Arlington, Va. - For the second time in five days, Marywood University gave top-seeded Marymount University an early scare on the road before falling to the No. 1 Atlantic Region team. The fifth-seeded Pacers' season ended with a 70-47 loss to the Saints in the Atlantic East Conference semifinal.

Marymount (22-4) will take on No. 2 Cabrini University in the Atlantic East championship on Saturday. The Pacers end their season with a 9-16 overall record.

Aryah Aungst finished her career with a 17-point effort with six rebounds. Aungst went 6 of 11 from the floor and made all five of her free throws. Her final season ends with 15.4 points per game, the sixth-highest mark in school history. Aungst completes her three-year career with 920 points.

Aungst tied the second longest free throws made record with 22 straight to end her career, just one shy of a school best. Over the last month of the season, she made 29 of 31 free throws for 93.5 percent.

Despite giving up the first seven points of the contest, Marywood led the Saints 14-11 after the first quarter on Aungst's jumper in the paint from Emily Theobald. The Pacers twice led by five in the second quarter on Savannah Purdy basket, leading 21-16 on an old-fashioned three point play with 7:48 remaining in the half.

Marymount responded with a seven-point run, taking the lead on an Aidan Philips 3-pointer from Kathryn Ryan. Aungst evened the score at 3:40 on a jumper in the paint. The Saints regained the lead on Lauren Cunningham's steal and 3-pointer with 2:44 left. It spurred another seven-point run to close out the quarter and capped a 14-2 advantage in the last seven minutes.

Purdy matched Aungst with 17 points, adding three steals and three boards. Olivia Kosin tallied nine points and seven rebounds in her last game in Forest Green and Gold. Theobald provided eight assists.

Marywood's defense limited Katie McShea to just 10 points and seven rebounds, and Gabriella Haddad to nine points and eight rebounds. Phillips finished off the Pacers with 24 points.

The Saints fared better from the field than they did on Saturday against Marywood. Marymount outshot the Pacers 43.6 percent to 35 percent. The Pacers held on to a 78.6 free throw percentage. Despite the Saints' size advantage, Marymount just out-rebounded the Pacers by a 35-28 margin.

Giveaways were a factor in the end with the Saints holding on to a 23-8 advantage in points off turnovers.

Marywood has fallen in the conference semifinals each of the past six seasons.
