Swarthmore Gets the Best of the Pacers in Battle of Undefeateds

Clearwater, Fla. – Marywood University fell 13-7 to Swarthmore College in a battle of undefeated women's lacrosse programs Wednesday in Clearwater, Fla. The Garnet scored seven of the first eight goals to propel themselves to victory.
 
Gwyneth Gleason finished with two goals and an assist for a game-high three points. She added four ground balls and four draw controls.
 
Zoe Simeone scored two goals with three ground balls. Gina Babcock finished with a goal and an assist.
 
Marywood won 14 of 22 (63.6 percent) of draw controls, led by Melanie Wittick's eight.
 
Defensively, Jenna Durbin posed as a thorn in the Garnet's side with four caused turnovers and three ground balls. Sami Stein picked up four ground balls.
 
In spite of the score, the box score was relatively balanced. Marywood edged Swarthmore 26-24 in shots. Both teams finished with 25 ground balls. Swarthmore had a considerable advantage in success clears (77 percent to 64 percent).
 
Swarthmore netminder Katharyn Kemether played superbly with 17 saves. Eleanor Miller registered a hat trick. Sadie Camilliere finished with five ground balls.
 
The Garnet opened with 7-1 advantage in the first 23 minutes. Megan Jones opened with a goal from Sophie Peipher at 22:41. Trailing by three, Abbie Laime put the Pacers on the scoreboard on a feed from Ashley King at the 16-minute mark. Swarthmore responded with four more, capped off by Patty Gannon's unassisted goal.
 
Marywood responded with a string of three consecutive goals to end the first half. Gleason shelved a Babcock pass to start the run with 3:12 remaining. Simeone scored an unassisted goal with 1:02 left to trim the deficit to 8-5 at the break.
 
Swarthmore opened the second half with three straight goals.
