Marywood Inducts Largest Chi Alpha Sigma Athletics Honor Society Class

Scranton, Pa. – Marywood University inducted its largest Chi Alpha Sigma class in program history in April. Thirty-two student-athletes were inducted into the fifth class of the Chi Alpha Sigma Honor Society. Chi Alpha Sigma is the National College Athletic Honor Society.

Chi Alpha Sigma criteria includes attending a four-year accredited college or university that is a member of the NCAA; earning a letter in a varsity intercollegiate sport sponsored by the NCAA; achieving at least a junior academic standing by the fifth semester as determined by the certifying institution; achieving a minimum cumulative 3.4 (on a 4.0 scale) or equivalent grade point average (GPA) by the time of the selection process; obtaining endorsement from the head coach of your sports team; being recommended by the college or university Chapter Advisor and being of good moral character.

Additionally, Becca Dolgas, of the women's soccer team, was selected the senior medal recipient from this year's class. Dolgas, an architecture major, was named to the fourth induction class in 2019.

"We are honored to be able to celebrate and recognize the fantastic student-athletes at Marywood University through their induction into the Chi Alpha Sigma honor society" said Renee Jourdanais, Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) and Chi Alpha Sigma co-adivsor.  "These student athletes at Marywood not only live the DIII model balancing athletics and academics, but excel in doing so. In addition to academic and athletic achievements these student athletes exemplify what it means to be mentors for leadership, community service and good moral character amongst all those involved in collegiate athletics."

The purpose of Chi Alpha Sigma is to encourage and reward high academic scholarship of college athletes at four-year accredited colleges and universities, to recognize outstanding academic achievement by intercollegiate varsity letter winners, to encourage good citizenship, moral character and friendship among the high academic achievers in college athletics, to recognize and honor the individual athlete, his or her team, sport, athletic department, and college or university and to mentor and to provide leadership to other athletes.

With 29 inductees, the previous largest Chi Alpha Sigma Honor Society classes were inducted in 2018 and 2019.

Chi Alpha Sigma is advised by FAR Jourdanais and Nicole Malloy, Assistant Director of Athletics and Recreation.

Athletic accomplishments (Spring 2019-Winter 2020) of the Inductees included: seven First Team All-Atlantic East, 10 Second Team All-Atlantic East, four Atlantic East individual champions, one NCAA Regional qualifier, and one NCAA statistical champion.
