Pacers Roll On to Third Straight Win to Open Cross County Challenge

Rolon earns double-double with 16 points, 10 rebounds

Scranton, Pa. — Marywood University women's basketball extended its winning streak to three games with a 69-63 victory over Wilkes University Saturday to open the Cross County Challenge. The Pacers will take on King's College Sunday for a share at the Challenge title.

Jade Rolon and Stephanie Klemick each provided double-double efforts for the Pacers. Rolon netted 16 points and 10 rebounds with five assists. Klemick totaled 10 points and 10 boards, and she tallied seven blocks. In just five career games, Klemick has two of the three highest single-game block totals in school history.

Faith Kendricks neared a double-double of her own with 18 points and nine rebounds. Kendricks connected on four of five 3-pointers.

Savannah Purdy led all Pacers with 20 points. Purdy went 8 from 16 from the field.

Marywood edged the Colonels 48-45 in rebounds. The Pacers shot 39.1 percent to the Colonels' 31.4 percent mark. Wilkes performed well at the charity stripe for a 87.5 percent clip.

Despite both teams having an equal share of turnovers with a dozen apiece, Marywood made the best of its opportunities with a 16-4 advantage.

Marywood (3-2) led for most of the first half with its lead grown to seven (36-29) on a Klemick jumper with 37 seconds left in the first half. Wilkes' Brianna Horton was fouled behind the 3-point line and closed the first half with three at the stripe.

Wilkes briefly took the lead in the third quarter, only to have it taken back by a Kendricks' 3-pointer at 6:33. The teams traded advantages until Purdy drained a long-range shot to go ahead 46-43.

Kendricks picked up where she left off by starting the fourth with a 3-pointer to extend the lead to 51-46. Marywood's lead grew to as large as eight (61-53), but a six-point run made it a one possession game when Jordyn Jennings made a jumper in the paint with 2:09 left on the scoreboard. A Kilie Wyers' bucket stalled Wilkes' momentum, and the Colonels continued to cut the lead down to one possession in the last minute. Rolon was successful on all five of six free-throw shots in the 45 seconds to secure the victory.

It is Marywood's first three-game winning streak since the 2018-19 season.

Marywood takes on the Monarchs on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the University of Scranton's Long Center.
