Baseball Sweeps Cazenovia, Heads into Conference Play 3-1

Pitching staff fans 24 Wildcats in pair of wins

Scranton, Pa. - Marywood closed their non-conference slate with 7-1 and 13-3 wins over Cazenovia College Sunday afternoon. The Pacers (3-1) got wins on the mound from Nick Notari in the opener and Danny Becker in the nightcap. Both pitchers are 1-0 on the young season.

Despite being out-hit 4-2 in the opener, Marywood managed seven runs, thanks in part to five errors from the Wildcats' defense. Morgan Theobald was 1-for-3 with three RBI while Jake Schuster (1-for-3) had the only other Marywood hit. TJ Lacey had the save on the mound after striking out six over the final three innings.

After picking up an RBI sac fly in the second to give Marywood a 2-0 lead, Theobald doubled to right center in the fourth to bring home two runs and give the Pacers a comfortable 4-0 lead. He would later score on a Vinny D'Auria infield groundout. In all, Marywood pitchers Notari and Lacey struck out ten Wildcats in the opener.

Cazenovia jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the nightcap in the top of the first, but the Pacers responded with a seven-run first of their own to take command. Scott Becker was a perfect 4-4 at the plate with a triple and three RBI in the win. Rookie Max Slusser was 2-for-4 and the only other Pacer with multiple hits in game two. Michael Tempel had two RBI. D'Auria and Quinton Roma also tripled for Marywood.

Becker struck out six in three innings of middle relief work. Tyler Quick and Michael Aronica struck out five over the final four innings, give the Pacers' pitching staff 14 K's in game two and 24 for the afternoon.

Marywood (3-1) hosts Marymount (2-2) in both teams' Atlantic East Conference opener Wednesday March 24 in a single nine inning game.
