Softball Hands Cavaliers First Loss in Split with Cabrini

Scranton, Pa. - Marywood University avenged a 3-1 opening game loss to previously unbeaten Cabrini University with a 5-2 win in the nightcap. The Pacers improved to 3-1 (1-1 Atlantic East) with the split while handing Cabrini (9-1, 9-1 AEC) their first Atlantic East Conference softball setback of the year.

Game 2: Marywood 5, Cabrini 2

Marywood used a three-run third inning to come back against an early deficit against the Cavaliers.

Gianna Marsico earned a complete game victory. She allowed two earned runs in seven innings with one strikeout and eight hits allowed.

In the third inning, Annie Heyen hit a go-ahead double to left-center to take a 3-2 lead. With two outs, Mara Hamm earned a walk, followed by an Emily Rose single up the middle. Nina Kozar took advantage of the runners in scoring position with an RBI single to center that scored the Pacers' first run.

Rose batted 2 for 3 with two runs. Heyen finished with a pair of RBI, and Burke tallied a multi-hit game with two base knocks.

Marywood tacked on another run in the bottom of the fourth. Sam Baltrusaitis led off with a double down the left field line. After Carolyn Alcantara had an outfield assist to get Baltrusaitis at home plate, Becca Zayle drove in Cait Becher with an RBI two-bagger to left center.

Rose and Kozar reached base to start the fifth frame. Following a Heyen sacrifice bunt, Jackie Burke hit a RBI infield single.

Game 1: Cabrini 3, Marywood 1

Avery Byrnes struck out 14 en route to the game one win for the Cavaliers. Byrnes improved to 5-0, allowing five hits and one unearned run. Madison Gugel broke open a scoreless game with a solo homerun over the right field fence in the top of the sixth.

Marywood nearly equalized in the bottom of the sixth, but Byrnes got out of a no-out jam with runners on second and third. After Mara Hamm walked to open the frame, Emily Rose doubled to left to put runners on second and third. Byrnes, however, got two consecutive strikeouts and a groundout to end the Pacers' threat.

The Cavaliers tacked on two important insurance runs in the top of the seventh. Emma Barbera singled with one out and move to third on a error.  Byrnes helped her own cause, singling to left field and bringing Barbera across the plate to put the visitors up 2-0.  Another error from the Marywood infield allowed runners to advance again, and a Madison Gugel groundout to second was enough to bring another run across the plate to make it 3-0.

Marywood got on the board in its last at-bat. Hamm singled to center with runners on first and second. A throwing error allowed Brooke McKay to score from second, but Byrnes got a pop-up to short to end the game.

Hamm and Rose finished the opener with two hits apiece. Hamm went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, and Rose hit 2-for-4. Hailey Rapisardi picked up the other Marywood hit in game one.

Marywood and Cabrini will complete their four game series with a doubleheader tomorrow in Radnor. A reminder, only fans of the home team are permitted at the contest. Marywood fans may catch all the action via live stat and video links available on the Pacers' softball schedule page.
