Baseball Splits with Gwynedd Mercy to Open Series

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - Marywood University and Gwynedd Mercy University split the opening two games of their three game series as the Pacers took the opener 8-3 but fell in the nightcap, 16-4.

Marywood and Gwynedd Mercy will close their series with a single nine inning game Sunday at 1:00 pm. That game was moved from Friday due to high wind advisories in Northeast Pa.

Nick Notari struck out five in 5.1 innings pitched to earn the win on the mound in the opener. Tyler Quick stuck out one in 1.2 innings of hitless and scoreless relief. Scott Becker was 3-for-3 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored. Michael Tempel, John Mandarano and Shane Smith all had two RBI as well. Jake Schuster and Mandarano had doubles.

Tempel singled in the opening run in the third, and Becker brought in two more with a single to right. Mandarano hit into a groundout that brought across another run as the Pacers went up 4-0. In the fourth, Tempel reached on an RBI fielder's choice, and in the fifth Smith singled in a run with a hit to right.

Gwynedd got two runs back in the home half of the fifth, but Mandarano and Smith got those two runs back for the Pacers with RBIs in the sixth.  The Griffins would get one more in the sixth before Quick shut them down.

In the nightcap, the game was tied into the third thanks to a two-run single from Tempel in the top half of the inning, but the Griffins would score two in the fourth and explode for a nine run fifth to put the game out of reach.

Tempel and Mogan Theobald (double) both went 2-for-4 in the nightcap.

After Saturday's series, Marywood stands at 5-13 overall and 2-2 in the Atlantic East while Gwynedd Mercy is now 2-10 (2-7 AEC).
