Marywood Stifles Gwynedd Mercy to Advance to Atlantic East Semis

Scranton, Pa. – Fourth-seeded Marywood University defeated No. 5 Gwynedd Mercy University 11-6 to advance to the Atlantic East Conference men's lacrosse semifinal. Saturday's victory ends a six-game slide versus the Griffins that dates back to 2015.

After the Griffins scored four unanswered goals to tie the game at halftime, Marywood held Gwynedd Mercy to just one goal in the second half of the Atlantic East first round playoff matchup.

Three of the six Marywood second-half goals came from Zach Vaughan. His hat trick was complemented by a game-high 11 ground balls.

Patrick Dingwell finished with two goals and two assists with five ground balls. Jeff Johnsen finished with a hat trick, and Dalton Metzger had three assists and five ground balls.

Marywood dominated the x by winning two-thirds of the faceoffs. Zach Bradbury won 12 faceoffs with nine ground balls.

Both Eric Stewart and Ben Mustakos had a goal and an assist.

Connor Reed picked up the victory with 12 saves with three ground balls.

Marywood opened the game on strong fashion. After an opening goal by the Griffins' Jason Eide, the Pacers stringed together five unanswered goals. Metzger assisted the first two Marywood tallies, a man-up goal to Dingwell and a go-ahead score by Mustakos. Johnsen capped the rally from Metzger's third assist, taking a 5-1 advantage with 13:18 left in the first half.

Gwynedd Mercy battled back with four goals in a six-minute span. Evan Yanuzzi scripted the equalizer on a Kohler Setley feed to make it a 5-5 contest heading into the break.

Vaughan reclaimed the lead for Marywood on a Zach Saneman pass at the 12:37 mark of the third quarter. Seventy seconds later, Johnsen doubled Marywood's lead to 12-7.

With just under eight minutes remaining in the game, Vaughan scored on a base-line goal via a Dingwell shot. Vaughan's goal was scored from 10 yards parallel to the goal line.

Jason Eide finished with a hat trick for the Griffins. Setley had a team-best six ground balls.
