Women's Tennis Clinches Playoff Berth with 5-4 Win Over Gwynedd Mercy

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - Marywood University women's tennis snapped an eight match losing streak to Gwynedd Mercy University by edging the Griffins 5-4 on the road Saturday. The win clinches a post-season playoff berth for the Pacers, though seeding and opponent are yet to be determined.

Marywood must wait for Gwynedd Mercy (2-1) and Immaculata (3-0 AEC) to play before their seed and opponent will be determined for Wednesday's semifinal matchup.  If Immaculata wins, the Pacers will be the #2 seed and host the Griffins. If Gwynedd (2-1 AEC) upsets the Mighty Macs, the three teams will have identical 3-1 league records and a tiebreaker will be used to determine seeds 1-3.

Marywood trailed 2-1 after doubles. The Pacers' duo of Karah Laboranti and Elsa Kovatch earned a 8-4 win at #3 doubles which would prove crucial entering singles play.

Faith Kendricks cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 win at #3 singles, Laboranti would win 6-0, 6-2 at five-singles. Kovatch would have no trouble at six-singles as she picked up a 6-1, 6-0 win to tie the match at 4-4.

Playing for the final point and the win, Caroline Cadden would earn a huge 7-6 (8-6), 7-5 win over Nicolette Diaz in the top singles flight, earning the winning point for Marywood.

Marywood's last win over Gwynedd Mercy came on October 20, 2013 as the Pacers avenged a regular season loss to the Griffins by beating them in the Colonial States Athletic Conference Championship, earning a trip to the NCAA tournament.
