Field Hockey Propels Past Soaring Eagles for First Win

Marywood outshoots Elmira by a 36-3 margin

Scranton, Pa - After giving up a pair of late heartbreaking goals to formidable opponents, Marywood University notched its first field hockey victory of the season. The Pacers toppled Elmira College 6-2 Tuesday in their home opener.

Marywood received goals from six different players. Milana Straub led the team with a goal and an assist. Sami Abbinanti, Angie Genter, Mackenzie Hoats, Shannon Gosline, Lauren Youngken and Straub each scored for the Pacers.

Rachel Yohn made one save to secure her first collegiate victory.

Marywood (1-2) went ahead in the fourth minute when Hoats drove the right side and delivered a cross that shot up in the air off of the goalkeeper's boot. Abbinanti came through to tomahawk the ball into the cage.

Genter doubled the Pacers' lead in the 14th minute. Her initial shot was saved. Genter collected the rebound and curled a high shot from 4 yards out.

Straub scored her first collegiate goal in the 21st minute, scoring off of a scrum. Elmira's keeper MeganRae Burke closed the first half with a penalty stroke save.

Hoats opened the second half with a goal in the 36th minute off of a loose ball in front of the cage. Elmira ended the shutout threat in the 40th. Felicity Brockhuizen one-timed a Sarah Griffith feed to near corner from 8 yards away.

Gosline added her first of the season. Straub dished a ball that rattled around the box, and Gosline fired it past the keepr for a 5-1 lead.

Youngken closed the Pacers' scoring in the 48th minute.

The Soaring Eagles' Brockhuizen had her second goal of the game. With a woman down to a green card, she scored off of a Jenna Heiser-to-Katelin Bailey penalty corner opportunity.

Marywood had 12 penalty corners to the Soaring Eagles' three.

The Pacers turn around to take on Bryn Athyn College on Thursday night at 7 p.m.
