Bakalyar, Gaines Named Atlantic East Elite 20 Award Winners

Marywood cross country teams sweep top individual GPAs

Lancaster, Pa. - Marywood University's Caleb Bakalyar and Hayley Gaines were named the inaugural Atlantic East Elite 20 award winners in men's and women's cross country, respectively, conference officials announced Wednesday. The newly established Elite 20 Award Program honors the highest achievement in academics and athletics by a student-athlete in each Atlantic East-sponsored sport.

Modeled after the NCAA Elite 90 Academic Recognition Award Program, the Atlantic East Elite 20 award is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average competing at the finals site at each of the Atlantic East's 20 team championships. Bakalyar, a junior English major, finished with a 3.98 GPA. Gaines, a sophomore majoring in Interior Architecture, recorded a perfect grade-point average. Both Bakalyar and Gaines were named to the All-Atlantic East First Team after leading their teams to three-peat Atlantic East championships.

While the fall 2021 award winners are being announced after the conference championship, future recipients will be honored during the awards ceremony at the conclusion of every conference championship going forward.
