Straub Qualifies for NCAAs to Lead Pacers to 13th Place Finish at Regionals

Milana Straub made NCAAs in her first-ever cross country race

Lock Haven, Pa.— Milana Straub qualified for the NCAA Division III Women's Cross Country Championships in her first career race in one of the most improbable achievements in Marywood University athletics history,

Just 10 days after completing her field hockey season, Straub finished seventh place overall at Mid-Atlantic Regionals with a time of 22:22.2. With her performance, she qualifies for the national championships in East Lansing, Mich. on Saturday.

Marywood finished in 13th place overall with 379 points. The Pacers averaged 24:26.1 on the 6K course.

Straub overtook 14 runners after the first mile to finish in the top seven. She was 21st place after completing her first mile in 5:54. Straub passed nine runners before the 3.1K mark and continued her progression to the finish.

Straub was the top freshman in the field. Her performance ranks ninth in the program record books.

She becomes the fifth women's cross country runner to qualify for the NCAA Division III Championships, joining Stacey Muchal (twice), Beth Schwab and Emma Doughman (twice). Marywood qualified as a team in 2013. Straub is the first Marywood qualifier since Emma Doughman achieved the feat in 2015.

After the first mile, Marywood was in fifth place in the team standings.

Hayley Gaines improved 34 places off her 2021 finish with a 65th place run. Gaines finished in a time of 24:01.

A pack of five runners finished within 1:40 apart. Atlantic East Runner Up and Rookie of the Year Kaitlyn Newberry cracked the Top 100 with a 96th place finish in her first regionals in 24:57.8. Freshman Paige Redman stepped up in a big way to take the fourth spot for the Pacers in 109th place with a time of 25:16. Junior Alyssa Williams rounded out the Pacers' top five in 113th place, improving 24 spots from last year's regional finish with a run of 25:32. Sophomore Taylor Seprosky finished two places behind Williams in 25:33, and Caitlyn Powell finished 129th place moving up 36 places from last year's finish.

Gabby Snee was the Pacers' alternate for the race.

Marywood won its fourth consecutive Atlantic East Conference Championship this season. The Pacers have won 17 conference titles in program history.
