Cabrini Tops Marywood in AEC First Round

Radnor, Pa. - Host and three-seed Cabrini University raced out to a 12-1 lead and never looked back as they defeated #6 Marywood 67-36 in the first round of the Atlantic East Conference women's basketball tournament Monday evening.

The Cavaliers (14-12) extended that 11-1 lead to a 17-5 advantage after one quarter, then outscored Marywood 24-6 in the second to take a commanding 41-11 lead into the halftime break.

Marywood closes their season with a 9-14 record. Olivia Ciullo was the only Marywood player to reach double-digits and had a team-high 10 points. Cabrini's Abby Paolini had a game-high 12 points while three other Cavaliers had 10. Miranda Liebtag had a double-double as she had 10 points and 10 boards while Katie Rodriguez had one as well with 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

Cabrini's bench outscored Marywood's 23-10 and the Cavs doubled up the Pacers in points off turnovers, winning that battle 20-10.

The hosts opened the game on a 7-0 run, then after a Marywood free throw ran off five more surrounded by a Pacers' bucket. A three-pointer with :55 seconds left in the first had the Cavs up 17-3 before Faith Kendricks drained a jumper to end their run and the quarter.

Down 46-13, Marywood slightly closed the gap by using a 15-3 run over a 4:26 span and made it a 49-28 ballgame, but the Pacers could not get closer.

Cabrin's defensive pressure limited Marywood to just 23.3% (14 of 60) shooting for the game, including a 13.3% (2 of 15) effort from three point range. The Cavs didn't fair much better overall, hitting just 34.3% (24 for 70) from the field and 37% (10 of 27) from long range.

Cabrini advances to take on #2 Immaculata University Wednesday night. The Mighty Macs defeated #7 Centenary in first round action.
