Softball Drops Doubleheader to Scranton

Scranton, Pa. - The University of Scranton took both games in a non-conference softball doubleheader at Marywood Wednesday. The Lady Royals won the opener 4-1 and the nightcap 8-3.

Marywood fell to 11-5 after the losses. Scranton improved to 10-5.

In the opener, Scranton used a four-run fourth to score all the runs they would need. Jessica Stad drove in two runs with a single to left, and Jenna Davida tripled to left center, bringing in the other two.

Mayrwood got one back in their last at-bat when Emily Rose doubled to right center to score Julianna Beidler, but Marywood's chances ran out there. Rose finished the opener 2-for-4, and was the only player on either team with multiple hits in the game.

Mara Hamm suffered her first loss of the season on the mound, dropping her to 6-1. Hamm struck out three and allowed seven hits. Jennifer Sweeney (4-2) won it for the Lady Royals, fanning four and scattering six hits.

In the nightcap, Scranton book-ended the game with a pair of big innings, scoring three in the first and four in the seventh for the 8-3 win. Courtney Wellet picked up her third save of the season for Scranton. The Lady Royals' pitching duo combined to allow just four Marywood hits and struck out four.

Sweeney finished the nightcap 3-for-3 for Scranton, driving in three runs thanks to a homer and double. Samantha Baltrusaitis and Rose accounted for two RBI for the Pacers.

Sweeney's opening inning three-run homer to left center gave the visitors an early cushion, and Davida drove in what proved to be the game-winning run with a double to left center in the second.

Marywood got two back in the fifth with an unearned run and Baltrusaitis' RBI single to right, and made it a one run (4-3) game in the sixth on an infield RBI single from Rose.

Scranton countered with a big seventh, with Stad opening things up with an RBI triple to left.  A sac fly from Jessica Inde drove across another run, and after an error helped Scranton score their third of the inning Heather Alic drove in the final run on another RBI sac fly.

Gianna Marsico (5-4) took the loss on the mound for Marywood, while Emma Tirolla improved to 5-1 for the Lady Royals.

Tomorrow's doubleheader at Rosemont has been postponed due to expected inclement weather. Marywood will host Cabrini University in a key early-season Atlantic East battle Saturday. Game one of the twinbill gets underway at 1:00 pm.
