Softball Splits One-Run Nailbiters

Clermont, Fla. — Marywood University split a pair of one-run decisions on Tuesday in Spring Break softball action in Florida. The Pacers were on both ends of 3-2 games, beating Berea College in the opener before falling to Lakeland University in the night cap.

Marywood evens its record to 2-2 on the season.

Marywood 3, Berea 2

Starting pitcher Mara Hamm accounted for all three Marywood runs at the plate. Hamm had a pair of opposite-field hits that produced three RBIs.

On the hill, Hamm pitched a complete game for her second win in as many days. She gave up two earned runs on six hits. Hamm struck out six Mountaineers.

Trailing Berea by one, Hamm hit an opposite-field double to right field to drive in Nina Kozar to even the score.

Marywood tacked on a pair of go-ahead runs in the fourth inning. The Pacers put the first two batters of the game on base when Samantha Baltrusaitis and Kozar walked and singled, respectively. Brooke McKay advanced the runners with a groundout. Hamm hit a two-out single to right field to give the Pacers a 3-1 advantage.

After an early jam in the first inning, Hamm retired 15 consecutive batters. The Mountaineers got to her in the sixth inning with back-to-back-to-back singles that culminated in a Savannah Fal run-scoring hit to cut the Pacers' lead to one. Right fielder Abbey Stalter made a miraculous catch to keep the tying and go-ahead runs at bay.

Stalter displayed her defensive prowess again in the seventh. Berea's Karie Harris hit a one-out single to left field to represent the tying run. A errant pick-off attempt ended up in right field, and Stalter gunned down Harris at second base for an outfield assist. Hamm retired the final batter with a groundout to the mound.

Kozar had two hits with two runs scored.

Lakeland 3, Marywood 2

Marywood was on the short end of a close game against the Muskies. The Pacers came back from two runs down to even the score. Lakeland used aggressive baserunning to plate the winning run in the sixth.

The Pacers stranded nine runners on base to the Muskies' two. Two of Lakeland's three runs were scored by pinchrunners.

Samantha Baltrusaitis finished 2 for 3 with one run scored. Jessica Hanley had a pair of hits.

Lakeland added a run in the second and third innings to take an early 2-0 lead. The Muskies' Hannah Hornsby led off with a single in the second. Pinchrunner Alexis Janssen stole two bases and scored on a Jessica Rohr single through the left side. Marywood caught some luck when a line drive ricocheted off first baseman Nina Kozar to Hamm for the putout. In the third, Marywood again caught a break when a batted ball hit a runner that would have created a runners-on-the-corner situation with no outs. Juliana Hall grounded out to stretch the lead to two.

Annie Heyen set the tone for a comeback with an exhaustive plate appearance in the third inning. With a runner on first base, Heyen saw a 20-pitch at-bat finally end with a hit by a pitch. Lakeland pitcher Skylar Hall forced the next batter to pop-up.

In the fourth, Marywood cracked Hall's code. The Pacers loaded the bases on the first three batters. Baltrusaitis cracked a single down the left line. Kozar drew a walk. Jessica Hanley hit a slow dribbler, and Baltrusaitis beat the third baseman to the bag. Kristie Epler gave Marywood its first run on a single to left field. Two batters later, Julianna Beidler socked a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Hanley and tied the contest.

Marywood took advantage of fortune and poor baserunning to escape the fifth. When Lakeland legged out a bunt attempt for a single, the lead runner tried to stretch the play to third where she was caught dead in the water by first baseman Kozar's throw across the field. A line drive to the pitcher Gianna Marsico kept the score tied.

Lakeland scored its go-ahead run in the sixth, thanks to its speedy pinch runners. After Cheyenne Mathas led off with a single, Mitty Schwartz swiped second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. She scored on Hall's single through the left side.

Marsico took the loss. She allowed three earned runs on eight hits in six innings.

After an off day, Marywood will resume play against Alvernia University and Mitchell College on Thursday. Check marywoodpacers.com for updated times, as they frequently change.
