Softball Secures Top Seed, Sweeps Marymount

Marywood edges Saints in pair of one-run games

Scranton, Pa. - Marywood University softball secured the #1 seed in the upcoming Atlantic East Conference Softball Championship tournament with a pair of one-run wins over visiting Marymount University (Va.) Saturday afternoon.

The Pacers took game one 2-1 and game two 4-3 to improve to 22-6 (11-1 AEC) and win their 10th and 11th games in a row, respectively.

In the opener, all the scoring came in the first inning. Kaylynn John's double to right center gave the visitors a 1-0 lead early on. In the bottom of the first, Ashdon Clark tied things up with an RBI single, scoring Emily Rose and Lindsey Jason to put the Pacers up.

Despite no more runs being scored, each team had their chances, especially in their last at-bats. Marywood had a runner called out at the plate in the bottom of the sixth that could have extended the Pacers' lead, and the same happened to Marymount in the top of the seventh to prevent a tie game.

On the Saints' chance, a sacrifice bunt moved a runner to third, and when Marywood's throw hit the runner going to first, Marymount's baserunner tried to score, but was thrown out at the plate by Cait Becher. 

Mara Hamm improved to 12-2 with the mound victory. She struck out 10 and allowed just five hits in the win. Morgan Hunt (8-9) took the loss for the Saints.

In the nightcap, Marymount again scored first, using a two-run triple and an RBI single to center to take a 3-0 lead in the top of the second. But Marywood immediately responded, as Jason hit a bases-clearing double to left center to tie the game.

In the fifth, Becher singled to center to drive Nina Kozar across from second for the winning run.

Gianna Marsico (10-4) struck out six in the complete-game victory on the mound. Shanyn Burch (6-11) suffered the loss.
