Baseball Sweeps St. Joseph's

Scranton, Pa. - Marywood University baseball swept St. Joseph's University Brooklyn Saturday afternoon in a non-conference twinbill. The Pacers (21-13) took the opener 7-5 and the nightcap 10-2.

Marywood's 21 wins thus far are the second most in program history. Marywood finished 22-19 in 2012.

Between games, the Pacers honored seniors Vinny D'Auria, TJ Lacey, Jake Schuster, Matt Ortiz, Quinton Roma, Morgan Theobald, Antonio Ferraro, Ben Gravel and Michael Tempel.

In the opener, D'Auria went 2-for-4 and Tempel 2-for-3 as they guided the Pacers to a 7-5 opening game win.

Schuster started the scoring for the Pacers in the first, scoring on a wild pitch. In the third, Kyle Morin's groundout to short scored Schuster. Marywood went up 3-0 on a James Myers single down the left field line that scored Tempel.

St. Joseph's-Brooklyn leveled the game at 3-3 in the fourth on an RBI single and two-run double.  Tempel then put the Pacers up in the bottom of the fourth with a single through the left side that scored two runs.

Myers' sacrifice fly made it 6-3 Marywood, and an unearned run off an error that scored Tempel gave the Pacers a 7-3 lead heading into the fifth. A two-run homerun from the Bears' Anthony Hernandez in their last set of at-bats cut the deficit to 7-5, but they were stalled there.

Marywood hit .455 (5 for 11) with runners in scoring position and were 4-for-4 with runners on and less than two outs. D'Auria and Schuster each had doubles for the Pacers.

Nick Notari (5-3) got the win after four innings of work. Ferraro struck out one in 1.1 innings of middle relief work, and Tyler Quick fanned two over two innings to earn his fifth save of the season, extending his program individual season record. Quick's fifth saves also moves him to tied for second all-time in the career saves category with Mark Granquist (2005-2008).

In game two, Gravel drove in the opening run with a single through the left side in the home half of the second. Marywood added a pair of unearned runs in the third to take an early 3-0 lead.

A two-run single from St. Joseph's in the fourth made it a one-run game. Highlighted by a Tempel two-run homer to left, Schuster RBI double and D'Auria RBI triple, the Pacers plated seven in the fourth to put the game away.

Lacey (2-1) got the win, striking out three over four innings of work. Michael Aronica struck out two in two innings of relief and Derrick Ricc-Riner struck out one and did not allow a hit in a scoreless seventh for the Bears.

Marywood will close out their regular season with a three-game Atlantic East Conference series against Immaculata. The Pacers will host the Mighty Macs in game one on Friday at 3:00 pm.
