Women's Tennis Claims 11th Conference Title

Bashore named MVP, Pacers earn first title since 2012

Scranton, Pa. - Marywood University claimed their 11th conference crown, and first since 2012, as the top-seeded women's tennis team defeated two-seed Immaculata University 5-1 for the 2022 Atlantic East Conference Championship Saturday afternoon in Scranton.

Bashore MVPAllison Bashore (pictured left) was named tournament Most Valuable Player. Bashore went 2-0 at #1 singles play at 1-1 at #1 doubles play between the semifinals and finals.

In Saturday's title match, the Mighty Macs (6-12) picked up the first point of the afternoon when Annamarie Degnan and Pamela Kontaras defeated Bashore and Gabriella Nowak 8-2 at one-doubles.

The Pacers responded with a pair of 8-4 wins at two- and three-doubles. Faith Kendricks and Karah Laboranti defeated Jessica Dougherty and Kelly O'Brien at two-doubles, and Elsa Kovatch and Lyndsey Medric were winners over Audrey Keen and Jenna Muttak at three-doubles.

Needing three points in singles action to claim the championship, Laboranti quickly defeated Keen 6-0, 6-1 at five-singles to give Marywood a 3-1 lead. Bashore then put the Pacers one-point away from victory with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Degnan.

Medric would close out the afternoon for the Pacers with a 6-1, 7-5 win over O'Brien at four-singles.  Three other matches went unfinished.

Immaculata's Dougherty was named the Conference's "Elite 20" award winner for having the highest GPA among competing finalists.

Marywood closes their season with a 11-6 record. The Pacers also won women's tennis Champoinships in 1992, 1994, 1995, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003 and 2012.
