Mathews Named Atlantic East Men's Field Athlete of the Year; Pacers Secure 18 All-Conference Winners

The Pacers won eight events en route to their third Atlantic East championship

Lancaster, Pa. — Marywood University senior Ryan Mathews was selected the Atlantic East Conference Men's Field Athlete of the Year, conference officials announced on Tuesday. Mathews led 18 Pacers with all-Atlantic East Men's Track & Field nominations. 

Marywood had eight gold medalists named to the Atlantic East First Team. Ten student-athletes received Second Team status for their runner-up performances. The Pacers won their third-straight Atlantic East Championship. 

Mathews was named Field Athlete of the Year after earning a gold, two silvers and one bronze. He won the hammer throw with a toss of 33.39 meters. Mathews then claimed two silvers in the discus and javelin with 35.54 and 33.94 meter throws, respectively. Finally, Mathews earned a bronze in the shot put after tossing 10.71 meters.

Marywood also claimed the Coaching Staff of the Year accolade after leading their team to its third conference title within the Atlantic East. The coaching staff consists of Rob Ahrens, Kevin Borrelli, Dejon Bennett-Monroe, Carl Daubert, Frank Passetti and Lauren Calvey.

Lastly, the Atlantic East Elite 20 award winner for men's track & field, which is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average competing at the finals site at each of the Atlantic East's 20 team championships, was awarded to Nate Skrutski of Marywood University. Freshman Noah Zeigler was selected to the First Team in the 100 dash and Second Team in the 200 dash. Zeigler won the 100 with a time of 11.3 seconds. He finished in second place in the 200 with a finals time of 24.02 seconds. 

Freshman Jack Baronski earned First Team status with an individual championship in the 5K. Baronski completed the race in 16:56.88. He picked up a Second Team award in the 1500, finishing second with a time of 4:07.94. 

Freshman Adam Kanterman earned First Team recognition for his 10K gold medal. He finished in 37:09.9, just ahead of freshman Ian Kovatch. Kovatch was Second Team with a time of 37:43.2. 

Sophomore Caleb Bakalyar reclaimed his 3K Steeplechase title for First Team honors. Bakalyar won the race in 10:52.28. Sophomore Mariano Casciotti was Second Team with a mark of 11:20.33. 

Marywood swept both the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. In the 4x100, the quartet of Zeigler, George Thompson, Ryan Benedict and Noah Schock won in 44.93 seconds. With a time of 3:31.46, Benedict, Thompson and Schock teamed with Michael Kelly to take First Team in the 4x400. 

Freshman Jeffrey Behnke won the pole vault with a height of 8 feet, 10 1/4 inches (2.70m). Fellow freshman Will Kalinich measured a javelin throw at 137 feet, 1 inches (41.79m) to win the javelin. 

Senior Michael Kelly garnered second place in the 800 to earn Second Team. Kelly ran the race in 2:03.54. 

Sophomore George Thompson had a pair of runner-up finishes in the hurdles to get Second Team. He ran the 110 hurdles in 15.58 seconds and the 400 hurdles in 57.66 seconds. 

Sophomore Ryan Benedict cleared the high jump at 5 feet, 8 3/4 inches (1.75m) to get Second Team in the event. 

Marywood will compete next at the Swarthmore College Last Chance Qualifiers. Qualifying Pacers will compete at the AARTFC Championships next week at Moravian University.
