OPENING DAY WINNER | Raffino Ruffles Hawks' Feathers with Late Game-Winning Goal

Pacers avenge 6-0 loss to Hartwick last season

Scranton, Pa. — Marywood University secured a win on its men's soccer season opener for the first time since 2010. The Pacers came back from a one-goal deficit to post a 2-1 victory over Hartwick College on Thursday.

The Pacers avenge a 6-0 loss to the Hawks on last season's opening game in Oneonta, N.Y.  Marywood has a 2-1 lead in the series against the former Division I men's soccer squad.

Trailing by a 1-0 score since the 19th minute, Mason Guelho evened the score on a delightful pass from David Chemidlin. On a set piece from 35 yards out in the 72nd minute, Chemidlin sailed a ball that found Guelho standing just in front of the far post. Guelho headed the ball just in front of the goal line.

Ryan Raffino notched the game-winning tally in the 81st minute. On a ball that was played back to the goalkeeper, Danny Gomez headed a ball forward just past the midfield. The Hawks' defender overran the ball at the 18-yard line, and Raffino raced to beat the goalkeeper on a 1v1 situation.

Raffino's game winner was his first collegiate goal. Guelho had the third of his career. Both Chemidlin and Gomez were credited with assists.

Alex Russo picked up the win at keeper with six saves. Chemidlin also kept a ball out of net in the first half for a team save.

Hartwick outshot the Pacers by a 15-9 margin and doubled Marywood 8-4 in shots on target. The Pacers had a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Marywood looks to jump out to one of the best starts in program history on Saturday. The Pacers host Penn State Scranton at 4 p.m.
