Pacers Stay Even with Split at Etown Invite

Emily O'Brien blocks five shots in win over Blazers

Elizabethtown, Pa. — Marywood University kept its women's volleyball record at .500 with a split at the Elizabethtown Invitational. The Pacers defeated Hood College 3-1 before falling 3-0 to the host Blue Jays. 

The Pacers (5-5) beat the Blazers by scores of 25-20, 19-25, 25-23, 25-22. Elizabethtown beat Marywood by scores of 25-11, 25-8, 25-10.

Mikayla Meek tallied 12 kills and 16 assists. Shannon Corr led the team in points (12.5) with eight kills and four total blocks. 

Emily O'Brien put back five Blazer attempts to complement a seven-kill effort. 

In the back end, Donna Bostjancic and Sydney Steiner contributed with 15 digs. 

In the first set, Marywood opened with the first five points off Steiner serves. Bostjancic had a rare libero kill to take a 5-0 advantage. O'Brien and Karli Boyer issued a key block for the penultimate point. 

After taking the second set, Hood had a 17-11 advantage in the third. Marywood scored seven consecutive points on Libby Smith points. Meek had a kill to even the score at 17 apiece, and O'Brien and Corr blocked a shot for the go-ahead point. O'Brien broke a 23-23 draw with a kill before the Pacers' secured the 2-1 lead on a Hood attack error. 

The fourth set also came in comeback fashion. Trailing 18-13, the Pacers chipped away at the Blazers. Marywood had eight straight points on Steiner serves. Marywood turned a 20-16 deficit to a 24-20 match point chance. Smith gave Marywood a 21-20 lead with a kill. After Hood broke two match points, Meek had a kill to punch the win. 

Elizabethtown 3, Marywood 0

Corr had six kills. Bostjancic finished with 11 digs. 

The Blue Jays were led by Bryanna Miller with 12 kills. Sarah Hanks had 20 assists. 

The Pacers travel to Muhlenberg College on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
