Volleyball Brought Down by Griffins in Four Sets

Scranton, Pa. — An early first set victory was unable to lift Marywood University in a 3-1 loss to Gwynedd Mercy University Wednesday in its Atlantic East Conference volleyball opener. 

The Griffins won by scores of 13-25, 25-17, 25-10, 25-21. 

Mikayla Meek led the Pacers with 10 kills and a .242 attack percentage. She also had three block assists and five digs. 

Gianna Norton tied for the 10th most digs in a four-set match with 28. Jaedyn Laws contributed a double-double of 27 assists and 16 digs. 

Priscilla Newton had a season-best 16 digs. Donna Bostjancic notched eight digs. 

Bethany Burns matched Meek with three block assists. Casey Hagerstrom recorded nine kills. 

Gwynedd Mercy's Charlotte Pugh provided 34 digs. Ayanna Brown had a game-high 12 kills. 

In the first set, Marywood jumped out to a 7-1 lead, thanks to a a five-point run on Ashley Humer serves. Meek had back-to-back aces, and Autumn Savitski had a kill to go ahead 13-4. Burns' back-to-back kills gave Marywood a 15-5 advantage. Hagerstrom secured set point with a kill. 

Marywood (6-15, 0-1 AEC) will play its Senior Day on Friday. The Pacers take on Neumann University at 7 p.m.
