Softball Takes Down Simpson, Loses to Battlin' Bishops

Clermont, Fla. — Marywood University held off Simpson College for a 3-2 victory and fell to Ohio Wesleyan University 2-1 Tuesday in the second day of its Spring Break trip in Florida.

Game 1: Marywood 3, Simpson (Iowa) 2

Marywood battled through a pitching duel by hanging on to a three-run cushion.

Brooke McKay went 2 for 2 with an RBI and a double. Mara Hamm earned the win by striking out six and allowing two earned runs in a complete game.

Marywood scored a run in the second, third and fourth frames. McKay singled in a run to take the lead in the second inning. Emma McNally drove in Hamm in the third, and Hanley plated what would be the game-winning run with a single to second field that brought in Marissa Gregory.

The Lightning (8-3) moved within a run when K. Kriegel hit a sacrifice fly to score M. Heidelbau in the seventh inning. Hamm forced a fly out to secure the victory.

Game 2: Ohio Wesleyan 2, Marywood 1

The Battlin' Bishops scored the game-winning run on a throwing error.

Sophomore outfielder Avery Panozzo scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Ohio Wesleyan took a 1-0 lead in the third inning against Marywood when Rylee Anspach reached on a fielding error.  Sophomore outfielder Alyssa Perkins followed with a drive to right that Stalter misplayed, allowing Anspach to score.

Marywood evened the score in the sixth when Tori Para reached on a fielding error by sophomore first baseman Sophie Leohner, moved to second on a sacrifice, and scored on a single by Ashdon Clark.

In the bottom of the seventh, Panozzo hit a two-out single. Alyssa Back (Newark) followed with a single, and a throwing error by the centerfielder allowed Panozzo to score.

Jessica Plunkett and Sam Ferrara each combined to throw seven innings without an earned run. Plunkett came up three hits in four innings. Ferrara allowed four hits in three. Each of them had two strikeouts.
