McCann, Kalinich Named Atlantic East Athletes of the Year

Lancaster, Pa. — Marywood University sophomore Michael McCann was named the Atlantic East Conference Track Athlete and Rookie of the Year for the 2023 season, officials announced this week. Marywood sophomore Will Kalinich was selected the Field Athlete of the Year. 

In total, Marywood collected seven First Team and nine Second Team All-Atlantic East awards. Scott Gartley was also named the Atlantic East Elite 20 winner. 

Marywood won its fourth consecutive Atlantic East Conference championship on Sunday. 

McCann earned Track Athlete and Rookie of the Year after an incredible first showing at the Atlantic East Championship. McCann totaled four gold medals and one silver medal for the weekend. The first year started the meet with a conference and championship record in the 3K steeplechase event with a time of 10:19.78. He then ended the time with a 10K win crossing the finish at 34:24.06. His next gold was in the 5K at 16:49, while he earned a silver medal in the 1500 at 4:07.28. His relay team took gold in the 4x400 relay to close out the met with a final time of 3:38.19.

Kalinich was named Field Athlete of the Year after earning a gold, a silver, bronze, and finishing fourth in his final event. He won the javelin with a best throw of 147 feet (44.8m). He followed that up with a 108 feet, 2 inch (32.98m) toss for second place in hammer. His bronze medal came in the shot put with a 39 feet, 10 inch (12.14m) top throw. To close out the throwing events he had a toss of 107 feet, 9 inches (32.85m) in the discus for fourth overall.

Lastly, the Atlantic East Elite 20 award winner for men's track & field, which is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average competing at the finals site at each of the Atlantic East's 20 team championships, was awarded to Scott Gartley. Gartley was a member of four-time conference champion Marywood, maintains a cumulative 3.9411 GPA while majoring in history. Gartley was named Second Team All-Atlantic East in the javelin with a throw of 127 feet, 5 inches (38.85m). Gartley is a back-to-back conference winner in the javelin. 

Sophomore Noah Zeigler was selected First Team in the 100 dash with a time of 11.18 seconds. He was selected Second Team All-Atlantic East in the 200 dash. It marked his second consecutive conference championship in the 100 dash and second runner-up finish in the 200 dash. 

Jack Baronski won the 1,500 by setting an Atlantic East Championships record of 4:05.26. In addition to his First Team All-Atlantic East honors, Baronski was Second Team in the 800. His 800 time of 1:59.09 was the third-fastest all-time at Marywood. 

The 4x400 relay of Baronski, Thonas Lee, John Russo and McCann captured First Team honors with a gold medal. The foursome finished with a mark of 3:38.19. 

The 4x100 relay of Matt Custer, Tyler Hoysan, Zeigler and CJ Shygelski earned Second Team consideration with a time of 44.79 seconds. 

Freshman Joseph Cardillo had a pair of Second Team honors in the 5K and 10K. Cardillo was second place in the 5K in 16:49.76 and the 10 in 34:25.08. 

John Russo came home with a Second Team All-Atlantic East award in the 400 hurdles. Russo ran a 1:04.96 to finish in second place.
