Marywood Comes Short to Monarchs in Four Sets

Scranton, Pa. — Marywood University lost in four sets to King's College Tuesday in non-conference volleyball. The Pacers extended the match with a win in the third set before the Monarchs closed the door with an early run to start the deciding fourth set. 

King's won by scores of 25-18, 25-20, 23-25, 25-15. 

Making their home season opener, Marywood had four players — Casey Hagerstrom, Mikayla Meek, Libby Smith and Haley Hallman — with nine kills. Bethany Burns had seven kills without an error. 

Both Jaedyn Laws and Meek finished with 18 assists. Gianna Norton tallied 27 digs, and Meek had 11 digs. 

King's had three players – Emily Scott, Joy Kindall and Emma King – with 10 kills. Keely Hoban finished with 28 assists, and Morgan Williams provided 20 digs. 

Marywood (3-5) came back from a five-point deficit midway through the third set. Later, trailing 16-12, Marywood scored seven consecutive points on Julia Strohm serves. Strohm had back-to-back aces to even the score at 16-16. Smith connected for back-to-back kills to take a 21-20 lead. Hallman produced set point with a kill from Laws. Holding onto just a 24-23 lead, Laws delivered a kill via a Donna Bostjancic assist to close the set. 

King's scored 11 straight points to lead them to a fourth-set win. 

Marywood heads to Penn State Berks on Thursday.
