Volleyball Stymies St. Elizabeth in Three Sets

Mikayla Meek connects for five aces

Scranton, Pa. — Marywood University came out on top with a 3-0 win over St. Elizabeth University on Thursday in women's volleyball. The Pacers came back from behind in the first two sets. 

Marywood won by scores of 25-20, 25-23, 25-10.

Libby Smith and Autumn Savitski led the offense with 10 points on nine kills. Smith finished with a .400 attack percentage with just one error, and Savitski tallied a .185 attack mark. 

Jaedyn Marks factored in with 28 assists. Gianna Norton finished with 20 digs. 

Marywood (5-11) had 12 aces including five from Mikayla Meek and four from Casey Hagerstrom. Bethany Burns had three solo blocks. 

In the first set, Marywood tied the game at 18-18 with back-to-back points on a Savitski kill and a Burns block. Affter a ball handling error gave the Eagles the lead again, Marywood scored five consecutve points off Priscilla Newton serves. Laws tied the game with a kill from Julia Strohm. The rally was capped by a Smith kill from Laws. Marywood ended the match by outscoring St. Elizabeth 7-1 down the stretch. 

St. Elizabeth's lead stretched as large as 16-10 in the second set. Marywood went on an 8-1 lead to retake the lead on Meek and Newton serves. The two teams went back-and-forth with St. Elizabeth taking a 22-21 advantage on a Sienna Volpe kill. After evening the score on a service error, Hagerstrom jump-started the Pacers with consecutive aces to take a 24-22 lead. Savitski secured set point on a kill from Laws for te 25-23 win. 

Marywood kept momentum with a big third set win to close the match. The Pacers went on an 11-point run on Meek serves, stretching their lead as wide as 18-4. Meek had three aces in the rally. Payton Mosteller had match point on a kill. 

Saint Elizabeth (3-8) was led by Kristina Ashton's double-double of 12 digs, 14 assists. 

The Pacers are idle until they travel to Christmas City on Tuesday to take on Moravian University.
