Field Hockey Falls to No. 5 Johns Hopkins in NCAA First Round

Marywood plays in second NCAA Tournament in program history

Baltimore — Marywood University dropped a 6-0 decision to No. 5 Johns Hopkins Wednesday in the first round of the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championships. The Pacers finished their season with a 14-7 record. 

Marywood competed in the second NCAA Tournament in program history. 

Johns Hopkins advances to the Middlebury Regional. The Blue Jays (18-3) will take on SUNY Cortland in the quarterfinal round. 

Aliyah Heintzelman finished with a pair of defensive saves for the Pacers. 

Both goalkeepers Jenny Keagy and Sabrina Frazer made eight saves in 30 minutes in the cage. 

Marywood registered one shot on goal from Cydney Lahr in the 60th minute. Blue Jays keeper Jessica Lapidus made the lone save. 

Lila Slattery led the Blue Jays with two goals. Liz Falterer, Megan Chang, Sophia Albano and Grace Waldeck each scored once. 

Albano had a goal and an assist. 

The Blue Jays scored in the second minute when Chang clanged in a rebound off a Slattery shot on goal. In the 10th minute, Waldeck doubled the lead with when she backhanded an Albano pass into the cage. 

Marywood kept Hopkins scoreless for 17 minutes until Falterer converted a penalty corner at the top of the circle. In the next minute, Slattery collected a ball in the middle of the box, turned and fired past the keep for a 4-0 lead at the break. 

Following a scoreless third quarter, Albano inserted a ball and tipped home a Caeli Robinson ball in the 49 minute. Hopkins capped its scoring in the 51st minute. Off of a corner, Slattery collected an Ava Balacek insert, slid left and fired to the far post.
