Men's Basketball Ousts Monarchs in Overtime

Collin Himmelberg finishes with 24 points, nine rebounds

Scranton, Pa. — After trailing throughout the entire regulation, Marywood University men's basketball came back to defeat King's College 81-79 in overtime. Saturday's contest marked the third consecutive meeting between the Pacers and Monarchs that went into overtime.

Marywood (6-3) trailed by as many as 15 points in the second half.

Collin Himmelberg scored a career-high 24 points. Himmelberg was 7 for 10 from the field and hit 6 of 8 from beyond the arc. He finished with nine rebounds to finish one shy of a double-double.

Himmelberg hit a 3-pointer with one second remaining to force overtime at 66-66. A video review of the play showed Himmelberg's foot just outside of the perimeter arc.

On the opening possession in overtime, Brendan Franko gave Marywood its first lead (68-66) of the contest on a jumper in the paint. King's Jake Karnish hit a 3-pointer to reclaim the lead at the other end of the court.

After a pair of Ben Roder-Tims three throws pivoted the Monarchs with a three-point lead, Himmelberg drained a 3-pointer off of a Shilo Bivins pass to square the score at 71-71 with 2:22 remaining.

Mason Mendygral made a flailing mid-range jump shot to take a 73-71 lead. Another missed layup allowed Franko to find Shilo Bivins for an open shot at a layup with 42 seconds remaining.

King's had a chance to cut into the Pacers lead but missed both ends of a technical foul. Himmelberg made two free-throw shots to extend the Pacers' lead to six points (77-71) with 25 seconds remaining.

The Monarchs lucked out when Chris Patton's 3-pointer turned into a four-point play on a shooting foul. Again, Himmelberg made his free throw attempts to make it a two-possession game.

Marywood was 6 for 6 from the charity stripe in overtime.

The Pacers came back from seven points down with less than two minutes remaining. Himmelberg and Franko made 3-pointers to set up the former's long-distance shot to force overtime.

The Pacers and Monarchs series is tied 6-6 since the 2007-08 season.

King's had a 12-3 advantage in second-chance points. Marywood's depth was a pivotal story line, outscoring the Monarchs by a 44-14 margin. King's had a 40-22 advantage in points in the paint.

Mendygral scored 18 points with seven assists. Franko had a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds to complement a six-assist night.

After shooting a dismal 28.13 percent in the first half, Marywood was 48.28 percent in the second half and made two-thirds of its shots during overtime. The Pacers had an 80 percent mark from the free-throw line.

King's (4-3) was led by Patton's 22-point performance. Karnish added a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds. Garrett Burys scored 11 points.

Himmelberg scored 15 points in the last two minutes of the second half plus overtime.

Marywood welcomes Haverford College at 3 pm on Saturday.
