Men's Basketball Win Streak Ends against Griffins

Mendygral comes off the bench to provide a team-best 18 points

Scranton, Pa. -- Marywood University's three-game winning streak came to a half in a 91-74 loss to Gwynedd Mercy University Wednesday in Atlantic East Conference men's basketball action. The Pacers conclude their regular season on Friday at Cabrini University. 

The loss puts the Pacers (12-12, 6-5 AEC) into a three-game tie for third place with Immaculata University and Neumann University. The third and fourth seeds would receive a home date in the Atlantic East first round on Monday. 

Mason Mendygral finished with a team-high 18 points on an 8 of 14 shooting performance. Both Collin Himmelberg and Brendan Franko each provided 17-point performances. 

Trevor Seitz contributed seven points and six assists. Cole Johnson had nine rebounds. 

The Griffins (16-9, 9-3 AEC) were led by six double-digit outings. Aziz Parker led the Griffins had 14 points. Aquil Stewart (13), JoHaan Vinson (12) and Mike Marable (12) also paced the Griffins. Mazen Sayed and Manny Clark came off the bench to provide 11 and 10 points, respectively. 

Trailing throughout the first half, Marywood cut down its deficit to one possession six minutes into the second half. Johnson fed Mendygral for a jumper to move within two (47-45). The Griffins received a 3-pointer from Jake Okun, and Shilo Bivins responded with a put-back to keep it a three-point game. 

Sayed came in to eat minutes and contributed four points on a six-point run to stretch the Griffins' lead to 56-47. 

Marywood hung in the single digit, trimming the deficit back to two possessions when Franko drained a 3-pointer in the corner from Himmelberg. The Griffins went on a 12-1 run, capped by a Stewart bucket on a fast break. 

The Griffins shot 48.4 percent from the field and connected on 34.6 percent of its 3-point attempts. They were particularly effective from the charity stripe, making 87 percent (20 for 23) of its shots. Meanwhile, Marywood made just 13 of 20 from the line for a 65 percent clip. The Pacers shot 45 percent from the field and struggled from long range to the tune of 25.9 percent. 

Marywood travels to Cabrini Friday at 7 p.m. The Atlantic East playoffs begin on Monday.
