MAKING HISTORY! Marywood Tops Cabrini for First-Ever Conference Playoff Victory

Marywood will travel to Gwynedd Mercy Wednesday in the Atlantic East semifinals

Scranton, Pa. -- Marywood University captured its first-ever men's basketball conference playoff win in the 31-year history of the program. The Pacers earned a 80-68 victory over Cabrini University on Monday night. The third-seeded Pacers advance to take on No. 2 Gwynedd Mercy University on Wednesday.

Previously, Marywood had been winless in 10 conference playoff games. Additionally, Marywood (14-12) is 1-2 in two ECAC postseason appearances. The Pacers' lone postseason win was to settle an unbreakable tie for the final seed in the 2019-20 playoffs.

Trevor Seitz led the Pacers with 23 points. Seitz went 7 of 14 from the field. Defensively, he finished with a team-high 19 plus-minute rating.

All five Marywood starters ended in double figures. Collin Himmelberg tallied 14 points. Mason Mendygral, Brendan Franko and Austin Bausman each finished with 11 points. Bausman was a rebound shy of a double-double.

Brandon Reed came off the bench to produce a 16 plus-minus ratio in less than 15 minutes on the court.

Cabrini (7-19) closes the book on its storied men's basketball program. The Cavaliers have 14 conference championships, 16 NCAA tournament appearances, and an NCAA runner-up finish since beginning their program in 1974-75.

The Cavaliers received 14-point productions from Isaac Brady and Donoven Mack. Aarick Salata scored 11 points.

Marywood started the game with a hot hand, making 57.14 percent of its field goal attempts in the opening half. The Pacers built up a 22-point first half lead, thanks to a 53.33 percent from 3-point range and a perfect 7 for 7 from the charity stripe.

The Pacers went on a 14-point run in the first half.

Trailing by 17 points, Cabrini charged back in the second half. A 12-point run capped by an old-fashioned three-point play by Brady put the Cavs within five (64-59) with 7:41 remaining in regulation.

Himmelberg ended the drought, cashing in on a layup from Corey Perkins.

Cabrini cut Marywood's lead to 68-64 on a 3-pointer from Aarick Salata. Mendygral quickly turned it out for a gravity-defying jumper and a free throw to go ahead by six with 3:46 remaining. Mendygral stuck in the dagger with a jumper from Seitz with 1:37 remaining that provided Marywood with a 74-65 advantage.

Marywood was nearly perfect from the line, making 94.7 percent of its attempts. The Pacers missed just one of their 19 shots.

For the game, Marywood finished with a 46.4 percent mark from the field, holding the Cavs to 43.6 percent. Marywood out-rebounded Cabrini 35-27. Both teams finished with 10 giveaways.

Marywood will take on Gwynedd Mercy on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Fifth-seeded Immaculata University will take on No. 1 Marymount in the other semifinal.
