Women's Lacrosse Slides to Flying Dutchmen in Overtime

Marywood comes back from four goals down in second half force overtime

Scranton, Pa. — Marywood University fell in the final minute of overtime to come up just short for the third time in as many games this season. The Pacers fell 14-13 to Lebanon Valley College Tuesday in a rainy non-conference women's lacrosse contest.

The Flying Dutchmen's Alyssa Wene scored the game-winning goal with 36 seconds remaining in the first overtime period. Wene scored the winning goal on a free-position shot.

Natalie Yilanjian finished with a team-high six points on four goals and two assists. Avery Meighan scooped up 13 draw controls. She had two goals and two assists for four points.

Kaitlyn Smith tallied four goals and an assist for five points. She added three caused turnovers and four ground balls.

Olivia Stollsteimer totaled a pair of goals. Kortney Harry and Emily McLaughlin contributed a goal and an assist, respectively. Taylor Barksdale had four ground balls.

Freshman Jenna Scala had her best game in net with 14 saves. Her counterpart Jamie Handwerger made nine stops.

Marywood came back from a four-goal deficit with less than a minute remaining in the third quarter.

Trailing 11-7, Yilanjian passed a free-position attempt back to the arc for Smith to rip a goal with 52 seconds left in the third. Thirteen seconds later, Yilanjian fed Kortney Harry for a goal that cut the Dutchmen's lead in half.

Meighan twice scored unassisted goals that moved the Pacers within one. Wene scored a goal from Molly Whisler that gave Lebanon Valley (1-2) a 13-11 lead with 3:57 remaining.

Thirty seconds later, Yilanjian cut LVC's lead to 13-12. With less than a minute remaining, Madelyn Lee captured a ground ball and ran downfield for a successful clear. Meighan dished a pass to Yilanjian who ripped a goal that evened the score at 13 apiece.

In the overtime period, Lee again earned a influential ground ball but it was quickly turned away. Scala made two saves in goal. LVC kept possession for nearly the entirety of the second half.

LebVal outshot the Pacers by a 33-29 margin. Marywood gave away 26 turnovers to the Dutchmen's 21. Lebanon Valley won the ground ball game 30-22. The Pacers edged Lebanon Valley 16-15 on draws.

The game marked Marywood's third-longest contest since the golden goal rule was put in during the 2012 season.

Having lost each of its games by three or fewer goals, the Pacers look to get their first tally in the win column Sunday at Sage College in Albany, N.Y.
