Pacers' Comeback Falls Just Short in AEC Opener

Plokhoy finishes with a hat trick

Aston, Pa. — Marywood University stormed back from five goals down but ultimately fell short to Neumann University 9-8 Saturday in Atlantic East Conference men's lacrosse. The Pacers outscored the Knights 5-1 in the second half. 

Jake Plokhoy scored a hat trick for the Pacers. John Scibello tallied a goal and two assists with four ground balls. Aiden Kilkenny provided a goal and an assist. 

Nick Ericson went 11 of 20 at the faceoff-x with eight ground balls. Ericson also produced two goals. 

Defensively, Cam Hallet contributed four caused turnovers and three ground balls. Nick Baker had three caused turnovers and two ground balls. Baker is currently tied for third in school history with 29 single-season caused turnovers.

Colin Trainor made nine saves for the Pacers. Owen Avelar had 11 saves for Neumann. 

Brendan Boschi scored four goals and an assist to lead the Knights. 

Neumann outshot Marywood by a 40-36 margin. The Pacers had a 26-23 edge in ground balls. 

The Knights scored three straight goals to close the first half, stretching their lead to 8-3 on back-to-back Renzo Garone goals. 

Marywood settled down in the second half with four unanswered goals. Scibello started the run with an unassisted goal within the first three minutes. Plokhoy scored back-to-back man-down goals in a 14-second span. Aiden Kilkenny scored from John Scibello at the 12:48 mark of the fourth quarter to cut the Pacers' deficit to 8-7. 

Neumann scored its lone second-half goal on a Connor Hurley tally. With 4:23 left in the game, Dillon Kane moved the Pacers back within one on a Scibello assist. 

The Knights won the ensuing faceoff, and Trainor made a save, followed by a Baker caused turnover. Neumann was able to kill a two man-down penalty in the final two minutes. Avelar made a save on a Plokhoy shot. Hallett caused a turnover, but Avelar stopped two shots in the last minute. 

Marywood travels to Centenary University on Saturday.
