Pacers Perfect Through First Day of Pod Play

Marissa Gregory allows two runs in 12 innings pitches for pair of wins

Arlington, Va. — Marywood University opened Atlantic East Conference postseason softball play with a pair of victories Friday. With a game in hand, the third-seeded Pacers will take on No. 2 Marymount University on Saturday for a chance to qualify for its third consecutive championship series.

Marywood defeated fifth-seeded Neumann University 9-1 in five innings. The Pacers defeated host Marymount 3-1 to gain an advantage heading into the final day of pod play.

The Saints defeated Neumann University in the opener.

Game 2: Marywood 9, Neumann 1 (5 inn.)

Marissa Gregory earned her 13th victory of the season by allowing one earned run over five hits. She struck out six. Gregory helped her cause with a pair of RBIs and a double.

Marley Sarafinko and Jessica Hanley each went 2 for 2. Hanley hit a double and scored two runs.

Renee McDonald and Emma McNally each scored two runs. Abbey Stalter recorded two RBIs.

Neumann (16-26) went ahead 1-0 with a Spinella sacrifice fly in the second inning. Marywood responded with two runs in the bottom hal of the inning. After Hanley and McDonald hit back-to-back doubles, Gregory made it three in a row with a two-bagger to center field.

The Pacers piled it on in the bottom of the third inning. Sarafinko led off with a single to left center. Priscilla Grill hit an RBI single, and then Marywood pulled off a double steal to add another run. Stalter hit a single that plated two runs, and Sarafinko added a single to left field that brough home the Pacers' eighth run.

McNally hit a home run.

Game 3: Marywood 3, Marymount 1

Emma McNally had both of Marywood's RBIs. Marley Sarafinko had a pair of sacrifice bunts.

Marissa Gregory won for the second time in the day. Again, she allowed one earned run in a complete game. She yielded six hits and no walks to complement five strikeouts.

Marywood was unable to take advantage of back-to-back fielding errors on the part of the Marymount infield in the top of the first inning. Shanyn Burch stranded two runners in scoring position by forcing a groundout to shortstop.

After letting the leadoff runner reach in the second, Gregory struck out two batters swinging to get out unscathed.

Marywood put a crooked number on the scoreboard in the third inning. Abbey Stalter singled up the middle, and Kat Davis legged out a bunt single. Following Sarafinko's bunt to move the runners along, Stalter was gunned out at the plate on a Tori Para fielder's choice. McNally broke through with a single that evaded the shortstop's reach to bring home Davis. Marywood finally was able to benefit from a Marymount error when a Grill comebacker to the pitcher was misplayed to allow Para to score.

The Pacers (22-14) earned a well-needed insurance run in the top of the seventh inning. In almost a mirror image of the third inning, Stalter started the inning with a leadoff walk, and Davis again moved her with a single to the right side. Sarafinko pushed the runners to scoring position with a bunt. Following a Para scorcher that was stabbed by the third baseman, McNally singled up the middle to bring home Stalter.

Marymount threatened in the bottom of teh seventh. Kaylee Atkins led off with a blast to left field for a home run. After a popup to shortstop, Ashleigh Mannion hit a ground-rule double that bopped over the right field fence. H. Leamer hit a flyout to right field that sent Mannion to third base. To cap an 12-pitch at-bar, Leila Hernandez hit a deep fly that was ranged by the glove of center fielder Stalter for the victory.

Defensively, Sarafinko had four assists and a putout, and Davis put out six with two assists.

Johnson recorded two hits for the Saints.

The second day of competition begins Saturday at noon in Arlington, Va.
