Hagerstrom Breaks Kills Record in Comeback Thriller

Marywood comes back from two sets down to defeat the Broncos

Scranton, Pa. — Graduate student Casey Hagerstrom broke the Marywood University volleyball single-match kills record in a 3-2 comeback victory over SUNY Delhi on Wednesday. The Pacers came back from two sets down to defeat the Broncos in five games.

Marywood won by scores of 14-25, 22-25, 25-20, 26-24, 15-11. The Pacers are 4-1 all-time against the Broncos.

Hagerstrom finished with 26 kills to break the single-match record for all sets. She smashed the previous standing record by three kills, previously set by Peri Sheerin (Albright, 2018) and Mikayla Meek (Centenary, 2022).

Hagerstrom garnered 31 1/2 points in an all-around performance. She produced 26 kills on 51 attempts for a .431 attack percentage. Hagerstrom had six blocks with one solo and five assists. The Bethpage, N.Y. native also factored in with two aces.

Her previous best was a 21-kill effort versus FDU-Florham in 2022.

Libby Smith finished with nine kills and 14 digs. Bethany Burns had six points on the night.

Defensively, Julia Strohm took over the libero position with 23 digs. Emiliy Agnoli added 18 digs.

Jaedyn Laws had a double-double of 18 assists and 13 digs. Libby Zick contributed 19 digs adn three aces.

At the net, Ryleigh Hart tallied three block assists.

Delhi (3-9) was led by Finley Benn's 16 kills and 17 digs. Jaiden Venute produced 34 assists and 14 digs. Audrey Logsdon finished with nine aces and 22 digs.

In a battle of equine rivals, the Pacers struggled to get out of the gate in the opening sets. The Broncos were off to the races with a 10-3 in the early goings of the first set. Delhi was several lengths ahead after scoring six straight off Logsdon serves to take a 22-9 advantage.

The Broncos didn't horse around in the second set, trotting out of the chute with a 9-4 lead. Marywood closed the gap to 17-16 on a five-point run capped by a Hagerstrom service ace. Ultimately, the Broncos were able to hold off the Pacers thanks to their match-best .270 attack percentage.

Trailing 18-15 in the third set, Marywood's luck turned with a four-point service game by Strohm. Smith and Hagerstrom earned a block to even the score at 18-18. Hagerstrom gave Marywood a 19-18 lead with a kill from Zick. The Pacers outraced the Broncos down the homestretch, scoring the winning point on an Autumn Savitski kill from Hagerstrom.

The fourth set was neck-and-neck for the entire set length. Delhi broke away for a 19-16 lead on Benn's kill. Marywood regained its stride to even the score at 19-19 on a Zick ace. Marywood finished with six of the final seven points. The Pacers broke match point with a Smith kill. There was no need for a photo finish as Hagerstrom proved to be the closer back-to-back points to win by a 26-24 score.

Marywood jockeyed its way to a 6-2 lead in the early goings of the fifth set. A timeout spurred the Broncos to five unanswered points, taking a 7-6 lead on a Babcock kill. Both teams traded places with Megan Kraus giving the Broncos an 11-10 lead on an ace. Burns turned things around with a Kill from Zick to bring Strohm to the service line. Marywood trotted to the finish with the final five points of the match. Smith had a kill to take a 12-11 lead. Hagerstrom continued her stud-like performance with a block and kill in back-to-back rallies, setting up Smith's kill to send the Pacers to the winner's circle.

Marywood saddles up against Oneonta State and Hartwick College Saturday at the Dewar Arena in Oneonta, N.Y.
