Marywood Falls Short to Griffins in Overtime

Shilo Bivins, Mason Mendygral each score 17 points

Scranton, Pa. — Marywood University came just short of knocking off undefeated Gwynedd Mercy University Wednesday in Atlantic East Conference men's basketball. The Pacers lost a 87-78 overtime decision to the Griffins.

Mason Mendygral and Shilo Bivins each led the Pacers with 17 points apiece. Mendygral provided six assists, and Bivins shot 8 of 9 from the field.

Brendan Franko added 12 points and eight rebounds. Brandon Reed provided Marywood with a spark offensively and defensively with 10 points in a mere seven minutes.

Marywood trailed by as many as 13 points in the first half. The Pacers overtook the Griffins on a 13-point run in the opening 10 minutes of the second half. Trevor Seitz hit a high-arcing 3-pointer at the top of the key to even the score at 45-45 with 12:50 remaining.

The Pacers took their first lead when Bivins dunked following a botched defensive press to take a 47-45 advantage. Mendygral stole a pass and dropped in a layup to extend the lead. Bivins capped the run with an emphatic slam to take a 51-45 lead at the 10:33 mark.

Marywood led by as many as seven points on a Cole Johnson long-distance shot at 7:44.

Gwynedd Mercy scored eight straight to reclaim the lead (58-57) on an Aquil Stewart 3-pointer. Both teams traded leads throughout the remainder of regulation — a tip-in by Bivins put Marywood with a three-point lead with 2:15 left.

Like last game, neither team scored for the last two minutes. With 11 seconds left, Stewart launched an off-balance desperation 3-pointer — following his offensive rebound — that evened the score at 68-68.

The Griffins scored 10 unanswered points in the first 1:52 of overtime. Justin Savage made an old-fashioned three-point play, and Stewart made all three shots after drawing a shooting foul beyond the arc. Marywood trimmed the lead to five points (80-75) on Reed's 3-pointer from Ty Cheney with 1:22 left. Stewart scored consecutive baskets to seal the win.

Gwynedd Mercy had four steals and shot 77.8 percent in overtime.

The Griffins were led by Shawn Summers Jr.'s 20 points. Stewart scored 19 points, and Mike Marable recorded a double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds.

Marywood looks for its first Atlantic East win of the season Saturday when it hosts Pratt Institute at 1 p.m.
