Marywood Knocks Down Kean, 14-10

Pacers hold off fourth quarter Kean run

Scranton, Pa. — Marywood University evened its record with a 14-10 victory over Kean University on Friday afternoon in women's lacrosse. The Pacers earned their first-ever win over the Cougars. 

Avery Meighan finished with six goals and an assist for seven points. She propelled the Pacers on both ends of the field with with eight ground balls and 10 draw controls. 

Kaitlyn Smith contributed three goals and two assists for five points. She tied for a team-best three caused turnovers with five draw controls and four ground balls. 

Jessica Banta scored twice with three caused turnovers. Alli Duncan had a pair of goals. 

Natalie Yilanjian scored and assisted the last two goals. 

In net, Jenny Keagy made six saves with three ground balls. 

Marywood (3-3) opened with the first three goals of the game. Banta scored an unassisted goal 38 seconds into regulation. Meighan tallied a woman-down goal and scored her second tally at the 6:56 mark for a 3-0 lead. 

Meighan scored at the first-quarter horn to take a 4-1 advantage. 

With a 7-4 lead at the break, Marywood outscored Kean 4-0 in the third quarter. Meighan opened the frame with a woman-up unassisted goal 22 seconds into the half. Duncan's second goal of the period gave the Pacers an 11-4 lead. 

Marywood's run was washed out by four straight Kean goals in the first 10 minutes of the fourth. Skyler Ray scored three goals in that timespan to put the Cougars within three (11-8). Banta tallied a woman-up goal at 4:42 from Smith, and Meighan turned a Yilanjian pass into a goal with 3:23 left. 

The Cougars (0-3) turned around with a pair of goals from Emily Javick and Ray within a 27-second span. 

Yilanjian came through with a key draw control to hold possession and scored with 17 seconds to secure the victory.

Carly Lynch had her first career point for the Pacers.

Ray led the Cougars with five goals. Shannon Palen tallied four assists. Savannah Olsson provided six ground balls and three caused turnovers. 

Marywood hosts Stockton University on Monday at 2 p.m.
