Pacers Come Up Short at Marymount

Marymount scores with 1:20 remaining in regulation

Arlington, Va. — Marywood University came up short in a neck-and-neck battle with Marymount University in an 9-8 loss Saturday to open the Atlantic East Conference men's lacrosse slate. The Pacers fall to 6-7 overall and 0-1 in conference play. 

The Saints' Bryan Maguire scored the game-winning goal from Mason Vandawater with 1:20 remaining in the game. Marymount's Cameron Glass won the ensuing faceoff. Marywood's Nick Baker caused a turnover; however, the Pacers were unable to get a shot to send the game into overtime. 

Ben Meighan led Marywood with three goals and an assist for four points. Ricky Strobel scored twice, and Sean Bonhag had two assists. 

Luke Ament won six ground balls. Baker caused three turnovers. Wil Pieters notched three ground balls. 

Colin Trainor made 19 saves to lead the Pacers. 

Marymount outshot the Pacers by a 56-25 margin. The Saints doubled the Pacers 28-14 in shots on goal. Marymount led the Pacers 34-19 in ground balls. 

Marywood jumped out to an early 2-1 lead when Strobel and Meighan scored unassisted tallies in the opening 10 minutes. The Saints responded eight seconds later with a Bryan Maguire goal to square the game away. 

The Pacers scored three straight goals to take a second-half lead. Meighan tied the game at 5-5, and Sheamus Scanlan scored on a Bonhag pass at 10:58 in the third. Seventy-five seconds later, Bonhag fed Strobel a pass to set up a 7-5 lead. 

After the Saints tied the game at 7-7 to close the third, Ben Peters scored 12 seconds into the fourth quarter for an 8-7 lead. Roan Schumann tied the contest at 11:51. Both teams played scoreless for teh next 10 minutes.
