Marywood Comes Short to Saints in Overtime Nailbiter

Kaitlyn Smith leads with four goals

Scranton, Pa. — Marywood University came short in an 11-10 overtime loss to Marymount University Saturday in the Atlantic East Conference women's lacrosse opener. It is the third game in the series history decided by just one goal. 

The Saints' Riley Love scored the game-winning goal with 1:52 remaining on a pass from Arayla Garcia. Payton Samson caused a turnover that was picked up by Abby Dunn. After a successful clear, Garcia found Love 5 yards in front of the net.

Kaitlyn Smith led the Pacers with four goals and six draw controls. 

Avery Meighan matched her with four points on two goals and two assists. Meighan had nine ground balls, seven draw controls and four caused turnovers. 

Natalie Yilanjian provided two goals and an assist with four ground balls. Kortney Harry had six ground balls. 

In goal, Jenny Keagy was impressive with nine saves. The Saints' Hannah Smith had 13 stops. 

Tori Wilson recorded her 100th career ground ball. She also notched two caused turnovers.

Despite the score, the Pacers outshot the Saints 38-26 and had an 18-14 advantage in shots on goal. Marywood was 14 for 19 on clears, contrasted to the Saints' 19 for 23 mark. The Pacers won 16 of 26 draws. 

Marywood jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in the opening 22 minutes. Meighan opened the game with an unassisted goal 13 seconds into regulation. Five minutes in, Alli Duncan doubled the lead when she pressured the Marymount goalkeeper to cause a turnover, capture a ground ball and scored on an open net. 

After the Saints scored their first goal, Smith scored three unanswered unassisted goals. 

Marymount and Marywood traded runs with the teams rallying with consecutive runs of three-plus goals. Yilianjian scored twice on Meighan feeds within a 53-second span to take an 8-5 lead. 

The Saints recorded their first lead on Tess Valentino's woman-up goal at 3:12 in the third. 

Harry rubberbanded a Carly Lynch pass to even the score at 9-9. Marymount's Payton Samson reclaimed the lead a minute later. 

Meighan picked up a ground ball with 1:20 remaining. Smith converted a free-position shot with 57 seconds to send the game into overtime. 

Marywood (6-6, 0-1) travels to Centenary University on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
