Marywood Undefeated Through Five Games for First Time in Over 30 Years

Pacers beat Alfred State, Lycoming in Williamsport

Williamsport, Pa. — Marywood University stayed undefeated through five volleyball matches for the first time in over 31 seasons. The Pacers defeated Alfred State in four sets and host Lycoming College in five sets on Saturday in Williamsport.

Dating back to 1995, Marywood has never won more than three matches to begin a season.

Match 1: Marywood 3, Alfred State 1

Marywood soundly defeated the Pioneers by scores of 25-12, 25-18, 25-16. The Pacers shot .309 against previously undefeated Alfred State.

Both Genevieve Pollock and Carolina Samaniego finished with 11 kills apiece. Pollock added three block assists for a .364 hitting percentage. Samaniego had a team-high .429 attack percentage.

Taylor Hallam added nine kills.

Ayla Bransford contributed 22 assists and three aces. Libby Zick had a season-high 14 assists.

Defensively, Catie Woolf tallied 17 digs. Andrea Fraga had 11 digs.

Alfred State's Alayna Tomlinson also tied for a match-high 11 kills. Gabriella Thurmond totaled 21 assists.

Match 2: Marywood 3, Lycoming 2

The Pacers survived their first five-set match with a win over the Warriors by scores of 21-25, 25-14, 25-16, 19-25, 15-10. It ends a three-game slide against Lycoming — the Pacers' first win over the Landmark Conference opponent since 2021.

Hallam tallied 16 kills and a .286 attack percentage. She added three aces and two block assists for 20 points.

Pollock contributed 14 kills and a .294 hitting percentage. Gracee Work had 13 kills and three aces.

Bransford added 45 assists, tied for the ninth most in a five-set match at Marywood.

Woolf totaled 32 digs, matching the sixth-most digs in a five-set match. Fraga had 18 digs and three aces.

Lycoming's Ima Mercardo and Emi Wenger had 19 and 18 digs, respectively.

After giving up the first set, an eight-point Marywood break got diced down to 13-11 following a six-point Warrior run. Marywood responded with 12 of the last 13 points off of Emilie Agnoli and Gracee Work serves to close the set.

Marywood won handily in the third set, thanks in part to eight-straight points on Fraga serves that gave Marywood a 21-8 lead.

In the deciding fifth set, the Pacers took a 5-1 lead with back-to-back Pollock kills. Lycoming cut the Pacers' lead to 9-8. Work returned the serve with a kill and capped a four-point run to take a 13-8 lead. Marywood scored its final two points off attack errors.

Marywood hosts Albright College Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in the Insalaco Arena.
