Men's Basketball Comes Up Short to Griffins

Gwynedd Mercy holds off Pacers in final five minutes

Dunmore, Pa. — Marywood University was unable to get through in a 81-76 loss to Gwynedd Mercy University on Wednesday in Atlantic East Conference men's basketball. The Pacers fall to 8-6 overall and 1-2 in conference play. 

Collin Himmelberg led the Pacers with 22 points. Himmelberg added five assists. 

Joe Macciocco came off the bench to produce 18 points with four steals. Michel Loftin was a rebound shy of a double-double with 15 points and nine boards.

Marywood trailed by as many as 12 points in the opening minutes. Macciocco brought the Pacers to a 44-38 deficit with a buzzer-beater 3-pointer to end the first half. 

The Pacers finally took a lead in the second half. Ty Cheney hit a 3-pointer from Shilo Bivins at 14:44 to even the score at 54-54. Himmelberg was left alone for a corner 3-pointer on a Cheny assist to give Marywood a lead (65-64) at the 13:02 mark. 

Marywood's final lead came at eight minutes remaining on a Loftin layup. The Griffins controlled the lead the rest of the way. DJ Johnson gave Gwynedd Mercy a lead with a bucket in the paint. He added to the lead with a jump shot on the next possession. 

The Pacers trimmed the deficit to 77-76 on Loftin free throws with 1:20 left in the game. Gwynedd Mercy made a Bruce Smith layup to extend the lead back to three with under a minute. Marywood was unable to drain a pair of 3-point attempts. 

Gwynedd Mercy out-rebounded the Pacers 40-32. Marywood struggled from the field, hitting only 39.4 percent of its attempts compared to the Griffins' 50.8 percent mark. Both teams were cold from long-range. Marywood made just 31.6 percent of their 38 shots from long range. 

Marywood made all 12 free throws. Gwynedd Mercy went 15 for 22 from the line for 68.2 percent. 

Gwynedd Mercy received 21 points, eight assists and seven rebounds from Johnson. Mazen Sayed had 14 points and eight assists.

Marywood hosts Saint Elizabeth University on Saturday.
